Re: Orsini's Contract/Doh/ PatsThink Orsini hit a walk off with the JJ hire. Don't think the circle of champions is also the circle of basketball fans.
Re: Orsini's Contract/Doh/ Pats
I have a difficult time believing we don't have the money as well, but it seems to be 'excuse' that's been going around for a year. FWIW, the current basketball staff doesn't think they are going anywhere b/c the AD lacks money for the buy-out, partially b/c the current coach still has the support of the a few prominent hoops boosters. Again, Doh & staff think they are here next year b/c we lack funds to buy them out. “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
Re: Orsini's Contract/Doh/ Pats
The first quote isn't a shot, it's the truth. What's to debate? Both Orsini & Doherty are to blame for the current state of hoops. I'm not griping about how much June is paid, I'm glad to have him. Great football coach and seemingly a very decent person. I'm griping that we apparently used every last cent to get him and have left basketball to die. Reputable ADs don't do that. Figure out a way to accomplish both revenues goals w/a defined amount of money. You don't just give it all to one sport and let the other one hang in the breeze. You aren't tackling the points here, just getting hung up on perceived slights of football. I'm far from jealous of football, cause I love football, watch every game, and live & breathe every down. That said, this AD has a way of creating animosity between the revenues. Of course, that happens when one is the red-headed step child. “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
Re: Orsini's Contract/Doh/ PatsWith back-handed compliments like that...
Since you only want to look at the big picture, did you consider the fact that boosters have their own preferences? Just because they reached deep to support football doesn't mean they are willing to cough up dough to clean up the men's basketball program. Even if JJ hadn't been hired, it doesn't mean those dollars would be available for men's basketball (or any other sport).
Re: Orsini's Contract/Doh/ Patsthanks for the posts PonyDoh, they are informative
Re: Orsini's Contract/Doh/ Pats
Very legit point. Certainly, boosters are allowed to allocate money any which way they want. I'm sure there are more than a few that are football-only boosters, and I'm happy to have them. Still, it's Orsini's job to have hoops back as well. If it's not the CoC, figure out a similar group. Basketball needs a hoops only support group/board, and I'm not talking Doh's cigar club. “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
Re: Orsini's Contract/Doh/ PatsHoops has a good starting point, even if they only used Doh's fave booster to this point (JDM) and the one that ran Tubbs out of town (MW).
Re: Orsini's Contract/Doh/ PatsAnd I'd like to make a point. Do we really give Orsini credit for the JJ hire? He did have to presumably circle up the Circle of Champions. But Jones fell in his lap, plain and simple.
Re: Orsini's Contract/Doh/ Pats
At a non-BCS school, you can get tons of stuff to fall in your lap for 2.75 mil. That's not really negotiating a deal, that's making it rain. “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
Re: Orsini's Contract/Doh/ PatsThat and Jones contacted us about the job.
Re: Orsini's Contract/Doh/ PatsFirst, there are a ton of good young coaches out there to be found, if we can't afford steak, buy fresh hamburger. Second, Doh was a least expensive "name" coach out there. Now if you get a Circle of Champions for hoops and raise $100 Million, you can go after any coach you want (except for a few "legends").
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna
Re: Orsini's Contract/Doh/ Pats
Hoops needs a circle of champions that is made up of money boosters and alum, ex SMU ballers, and a few hoops industry types. All big basketball programs have a support group specifically designated to basketball. Re: Orsini's Contract/Doh/ Pats
Did you go with TOMB on purpose ![]()
Re: Orsini's Contract/Doh/ Pats
Absolutely lol. The TOMBS crew is the new CoC “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
Re: Orsini's Contract/Doh/ PatsWhoever is the next coach at SMU will have a drastically better landscape to recruit in than Doh did when he first got here. New Crum Center, Tubbs debacle further in the past, etc. Time for the TOMB to go get a big name!
