Shadowman, no one cares if you played for SMU in the late 80's after the death penalty. You were probably on one of the worst teams that SMU has had in a while, or ever. Get off Todd Graham's junk, he is an overrated coach who can't win even in C-USA. June Jones is a fabulous hire, he will bring recruits and potential to SMU. By the way, you're an SMU fan so you should be used to losing. If you want to support a good team, then switch. Otherwise quit [deleted]. By the way Todd Graham is not a young up and coming coach. He's 45. Also how has Todd Graham's defense done against SMU lately?

I agree. The offense is predictable. I am almost always able to call the play SMU will run. If I can, I am certain the paid defensive coordinators of our opponents can do the same.

However, I understand that this offense is meant to be part of a transition into the true run and shoot. If this is the case, it means that the problem either lies in the talent or experience of the players. How many years will it take until SMU can finally run the actual run and shoot?

That said, you greatly undersell his recruiting ability and the drastic changes he has brought to SMU. He has worked miracles and has a proven track-record. I have no doubt that SMU will continue to improve under June Jones.

Good post, you are right, I may have undersold his recruiting abilities, but when you get those players, you have to be productive.

I very well could be wrong, most likely possible, but I just don't think that $2 million a year for one or two more wins is worth it, when there are more younger and energetic guys out there.

Could be wrong, probably am. But some of you guys have Hawaii Bowl Glasses on, you (like we all did) enjoyed kicking [deleted] against one of the worst secondaries in NCAA history and stopping a team with their two top rushers ( the major part of their offense) either hurt or suspended.

I want a younger guy with fresh ideas to lead us.

Shadowman I'm going to try and end this obsession real quick. What is graham's record against june jones? 1-2 i believe and his only win against us was when we had all of bennetts scrub players

I feel honored that you felt so compelled to register and make your first post to flame me.

I am just offering my opinion, I love SMU and want us to exceed just as much as you. I am glad you can wear blinders and go down the road blind road.

I can't.

Just offering my opinion.

And that really hurt that you would critcize my SMU team. Forrest Gregg was a great coach and that was the time of my life...and DAMMIT, we tried!

A member keeps pointing to Todd Graham. If I am not mistaken SMU has beaten Tulsa the last two years. I did not see the game but a friend who did(this friend played and coached at SMU long before the DP) told me that Tulsa, this year, had a short yardage opportunity to put the game away against SMU late in the game and tried some razzle dazzle trick play which lost yardage and lost the game.

Some say that JJ is lazy and stubborn and won't change his offense. If I am not mistaken, JJ never had a 1000 yard rusher until last year and he has another one this year and Line is leading CUSA in rushing. I read that one of the QBs at Hawaii said that JJ's goal was to go an entire game without calling a rushing play and he almost did it one time. That makes me think that JJ has changed his philosophy somewhat.

I am not and never have been a big fan of the run and shoot becuse I played in option offenses in high school and college and I believe in running the ball and having a QB who has a role in the running game. However, I know enough about football, ( I think) to keep my mouth shut when it comes to criticising a coach for Xs and Os. If one is not on the inside it is very hard to know what all the nuances of the offenses and defenses are today.

You are right, Since Graham took over Tulsa, we have the advantage. Yes, he is 45 (still younger than June), but he has endless energy, a great recruiter..and took RICE to a bowl...for gosh sakes.

But, a few posters think he is in line for an AQ job and leave. Bet June wont get that opportunity....that should be your answer there. Attach your wagon to an up and comer, or a has been? My opinion!

2 Million a year may keep you around

Memo to Shadowman - in 2008, SMU was 0-8 in conference play. That improved to 12-4 in 2008-09.
In previous regimes, we were lucky to sign a couple of 3-star prospects. For 2011, we already have 16.
There was nothing wrong with the game plan - if Kyle Padron had hit some open receivers, it may have been a different outcome.

Dude, a little patience is required.

June is not interested in an AQ job. Also Todd graham is a defensive minded coach. All defensive coaches are full of energy its practically a job requirement for them. The reason graham has been successful is because he's had great coordinators in major applewhite at rice and gus malzahan at tulsa. I think if you would look at his defense i'm sure people are going nuts on their board about how bad their defense has been and how people should question him as a coach since he cant get his defense to step up. To tulsa their best defense has been their offense

I hear you...Just voicing my frustration. I personally do not feel that the recruits have been world's above what we have had in the past. We are just playing much more cruddier teams..C-USA is pathetic.

But, you play the hand you are dealt. Just offering my opinion.

How can anyone say that June hasn't modified the offense considering the increased emphasis on the running game over the past two years.

Out of necessity....Plus he calls the plays before he even sees the defense.. Make no mistake...when Kyle runs over, its either run or pass, there is very little flexiblility.

You are just kidding yourself if you think that June has modernized...Good Recruiter, Offensive Genius (late 80's, early 90's).

Show me another team that makes their QB run over and get the play each down without seeing the defense?

SOMEONE SHOW ME!!!!!!!!

Shadowman - I understand your frustration. I meant to add it was great to be on ESPN three times this season. And, we were competive in each loss. Remember the worried looks on the faces of Texas Tech fans during our final drive? And, who else led TCU in the third quarter in 2010?

And, part of me is glad that we aren't facing Georgia in the Liberty Bowl. We're not ready for them yet.

Shadowman has a point when he questions June's decision to have Kyle run to the sideline between plays. It would have been nice to give that luxury up when we go into the 4th quarter behind by 17. On the other hand, I think it is crazy to be anything but over-joyed with having June as our coach.

1. PB's recruiting was abysmal.
2. PB seemed to think that the "swinging gate" was innovative.
3. The cupboard was bare when June took over. Very bare.
4. Two winning seasons in a row despite almost no depth leave me elated.

I truly believe these kids are playing over their heads.

As far as Kyle:

1. Kyle is a gutsy, talented young guy who came into the season with very little experience.
2. The run and shoot is not designed for someone like Kyle to step into as a true freshman.
3. Kyle was a little off today.
4. Kyle's ankle didnt let him run as effectively as necessary.
5. Kyle is gonna be a heckuva quarterback for SMU his junior and senior years.

If nothing else, June has brought great positive energy to SMU fooball and his recgnizable name and face are all over the media. We need this kind of exposure and I don't think anyone else could have done what he has done here.

Good post, but Rossely also tied A&M, should have beat them (if not for a BS call), Cavan had Ole MIss Beat.. Bennett has our last TCU win the week after they beat Oklahoma, hell we gave them their only loss.

Moral vicorties against good teams do not count. June has done nothing spectacular except take us to a bowl (Bennett was one win a way from doing the same thing).

Peace!

Do not wear blinders....We have had signature wins, and have been close to .500 seasons many times in the past. June was just able to get us to 7-5 two years in a row against a really cruddy conference.

I am happy as anyone, but very unimpressed. We have the history and the money, we should be dominating by now.
