Charlie Waters on TXCN tonight
Waters is going to be on Sports Talk tonight at 6:30. Think he'll talk about the SMU gig?

Do you think he can compete with Holtz and some of the others that have been interviewing?

Re: Charlie Waters on TXCN tonight
If TXCN has a decent sports anchor/reporter THAT would be the first question: Will you accept the head coaching job at SMU in the football program if it is offered to you? Follow up, if answer is 'yes': Has it been offered to you? Have you accepted? When is your first day on the job?
However, knowing how 'lazy' and 'biased' anchor/reporters have become over the years, they'll probably go with the 'safe' and 'easy' questions about his years with the Dallas Cowboys and what he thinks about their curent 'woes' in the NFL.
Is it a 'call-in' show? If so, please give the number! I'll call and ask those questions!

I don't know a lot about Waters but I have heard good things about him. I know some people are crazy about him, but is he the right man for the job? Does he have enough expreience to turn SMU around. I almost think we need someone young who has a little bit of cockyness and confidence. Someone who isn't afraid of anything...maybe a Spurrier or a Stoops?

Re: Charlie Waters on TXCN tonight
Evidently, Waters interviewed for the job yesterday!

And Waters is nothing if not cocky and confident. Not that he's the best choice, but I do believe he has those two attributes in abundance.

Re: Charlie Waters on TXCN tonight
I like Waters, but his limited college coaching experience concerns me. An up side of Waters being our head coach would be that many of the existing assistant coaches we like would probably be kept.
Overall, I think Holtz may be the best prospect interviewed so far. Anyone know if Rickey Bustle will get to interview?

SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

I like what Waters had to say. He's got connections out the wazoo in this area, and he's gotten the job done on the pro and college level. I'm a fan.
Plus, he said Whatasteve would likely be his personal chef.

I don't have access to TXCN, what did he say? Anything good?

There wasn't anything substantial about what he would do as a head coach, but he did touch on his connections in Texas, and his desire not to leave the state. He also commented that Copeland wa not going to make this a drawn out process "it's going to happen fast" were, I beleive, his exact words.
He wants to be in Texas, and Dallas specifically, I really beleive, that if it weren't for the tragic death of his son, and his subsequent hiatus from coaching, that this guy would be completely out of our league. He wants to get back in to coaching, but he doesn't want to leave Dallas. I'm not going to go as far as to say he's my choice, but he's getting closer, and I really like what he has to offer in terms of recruiting. Hell his wife was a cheerleader at SMU, what else do ya want?

Grider...if you think he is the right man for the job then I might just have to agree with you. Bring on Waters! And make sure he keeps Big Oscar Giles.

I didn't get to see the Charlie Waters interview on TXCN. Will it be repeated? If not, does anyone know if my 'specific' questions (see post up above) were asked by the reporter/anchor? Thanks.

MrMustang,
Re: TXCN interview
If TXCN has a decent sports anchor/reporter THAT would be the first question:
He was onto the SMU situation in 2 seconds flat. Showed film clips... SMU pounding Tulsa... Cavan looking like a goober during the Hawaii debacle, etc.
Will you accept the head coaching job at SMU in the football program if it is offered to you?
He didn't answer that question specifically, although he did say that coaching in Texas (Dallas specifically) was the only situation he'd be interested in. He also talked about how he misses football, how football is his passion and how he's a lifelong student of the game (complexities of Landry's defense, studying and building offenses to defeat ways of beating them). Thought that recruiting in Texas would be his forte. That his wife was an SMU cheerleader. So reading between the line, his answer is a pretty obvious "yes".
Follow up, if answer is 'yes': Has it been offered to you? Have you accepted? When is your first day on the job?
Answer is no. Waters clearly indicated that this was merely the first round... The early stages of a process that whould, however, be wrapped up quickly.
However, knowing how 'lazy' and 'biased' anchor/reporters have become over the years, they'll probably go with the 'safe' and 'easy' questions about his years with the Dallas Cowboys and what he thinks about their curent 'woes' in the NFL.
You could fault this reporter on a lot of things, but beating around the bush wasn't one of them.
As for me, I think we already have a great defense at SMU. Wouldn't it be cool to upgrade it to the Doomsday II Defense?
