I enjoy how Dukster constantly demands individuals present facts in conjunction with their arguments, while he does nothing but argue using emotions.

You state two completion percentages in your first post, this is true. You also state that SMU had a 1,000 rusher this season, although you fail to explain how that should in any way account for less scoring than was present in the Hawaii offense to which this SMU team was being compared to. It is every post since then that has been emotionally charged and lacking substance.

I stated the 1000 yard rushers as only a means in comparing stats, since that was what the original author was doing. I apologize if I wasn't more clear.

For passing yardage purposes, I understand and agree. For the team's ability to score, I do not see a connection.

I notice you've nothing to say on this issue since I pointed out how horrible the defenses we've played this year are.

I would be interested in the Time of Possesion for the the Hawaii teams compared to ours. Im not saying KP has been lights out but I do think this is a slightly different version of Hawaiis Run and shoot. We have a better running game than they did I am pretty sure they passed the ball alot more than we do and ran the ball alot less. I believe Time of Possesion is a big factor in winning ball games, it keeps our defense fresh and the other offense off of the field. I have no clue but i would think our TOP would be more than his Hawaiis teams. I believe starting in the first game that we ran the ball 25-30 times, so I believe from the onset JJ was going to run a slightly different Run and Shoot than he used to. I would also like to know the difference in Pass attempts to running attempts between the two schools, I am just too extremely lazy to look it up, and am not going to lose any sleep over it.

Also interesting: Let's compare this year to the 2006 6-6 year under Bennett. To adjust for the much easier non-conference schedule, let's look at only CUSA games. http://www.totalfootballstats.com/Team_College.asp?id=131&Season=2006SMU 2006: 9/30/2006 @ Tulane W 33-28 10/7/2006 @ Texas-El Paso L 21-24 10/14/2006 Marshall W 31-21 10/21/2006 @ East Carolina L 21-38 10/31/2006 Alabama-Birmingham W 22-9 11/11/2006 Houston L 27-37 11/18/2006 Tulsa W 34-24 11/25/2006 @ Rice L 27-31 Average points scored per game: 27 SMU 2010 CUSA only: 09/11/10 vs. UAB * Ford Stadium W, 28-7 10/02/10 at Rice * Houston, Texas W, 42-31 10/09/10 vs. Tulsa * Ford Stadium W, 21-18 10/23/10 vs. Houston (Homecoming) * TV Ford Stadium L, 45-20 10/30/10 at Tulane * TV New Orleans, La. W, 31-17 11/06/10 at UTEP * El Paso, Texas L, 28-14 11/20/10 vs. Marshall * Ford Stadium W, 31-17 11/26/10 at East Carolina * TV Greenville, N.C. W, 45-38 (OT) C-USA Championship 12/04/10 at UCF TV Orlando, Fla. L, 17-7 Average points per game: 26.56. Take out the OT TD against ECU and we're at 25.89. So when looking against similar competition (and actually, the defenses may have been better in CUSA in 2006 - they certainly couldn't be worse) we are the same or slightly worse than the Rusty Burns/Justin Willis offense. This really tells us how much Tom Mason is saving us.

When SMU was 1-11 in 2007 the team averaged 26 points. If not for overtime at ECU, that 2007 team would outscore the current one. It speaks volumes to the level of improvement the defense has undergone that the average points scored by SMU has actually gone down and that the number of wins has increased.

further proof that ppg is a unreliable measure of the quality of a whole team in most cases

I agree but that's not the issue - everyone agrees that the defense is much improved from those days. The offense doesn't appear to be much better despite being far more talented. I've yet to hear an idea as to why we can't score more points. Two best theories thus far have been field position due to special teams issues and lack of deep threat due to QB deep accuracy problems and/or lack of Sanders-esque big plays by WRs

Just as a point of discussion because I have no dog in this hunt, Jones said when he first came that he would recruit to his offense and when he was scoring the big numbers he would then concentrate on the defense. That has not been the case. There has been a lot of recruiting concentration on the defense, so much so that we are lacking in WR speed, and have been a little slow on OL depth although that is coming along.
I wonder if he realized just how bad our defense was and changed his method of recruiting in order to shore up what was a massive weakness and now he can work more towards the offensive production.
We still need some JUCO help at CB and DL, but our defense has a good base and perhaps now we might see some stronger concentration on the offensive side.
Just a thought.

No, I still disagree with your premise, regardless of defensive analysis. You can google until next year, and the point you are trying to make won't carry weight. I did notice your self bump to keep interest in this thread. Others have said the same thing....pointless. You didn't even make a point. You've googled a bunch of stats and think that will make your point for you. What's your point? We need to improve our offense? I'll go 2 steps forward. Let's improve the offense, defense, and special teams. The bottom line is this TEAM managed to play for a conference championship, and will go to a bowl game. The 2009 team tied for the Western Division title and won their first bowl game in 25 years. Along the way, they've won 15 games with a chance at 16, all under the same coach and offensive scheme. Additionally, the offense had to replace 5 offensive starters from the 2009 team and still won the West. Improvement has been made and it will continue, all under Jones. I don't care about yards or points per game. If we win 12 in a row 2-0, who gives a [deleted]? W's my friend, that's what counts. Your ppg stat comparison is BS. No one cares. If we played Highland Park and beat them to win the conference, who cares. You play who is on the schedule and as long as you win, who cares? Do you actually think Jones doesn't have a say as to the defense? Mr Japan, I salute and appreciate your service for our country, however, you are also wrong. The 2007 team did average 28.3 points a game, as compared to the 2009 team (29.2) and the 2010 team (26.6), however 1 W compared to 8 and 7 respectively isn't an even comparison. Wins are the only criteria to compare and contrast. The rest is for apologists. Those folks who like to think other stats make a difference. Sorry, it doesn't work that way. Your turn; go ahead and bump it a few times so (in your words) others will be able to discuss. I wonder if Jones gets paid for W's or points?
