MNF just did an interview with Al Michaels at halftime. Michaels said Dandy Don was one of the most intelligent, humorous people he ever met and that he just lost one of his best friends. At the end of the interview Michaels almost lost it.....pretty touching moment. I hope SMU pays the appropriate tribute to one of our greats

LA, do you mean Gifford or Michaels? SMU will do the right thing most of the time, i just hope they remember or arent asleep at the switch. Would be a fitting tribute to a true all american to honor him at a bowl game involving SMU and a service academy.

Hopefully I can find that clip on YouTube or somewhere tonight/tomorrow. I was out tonight and meant to record MNF just in case they did some kind of tribute to him.

Maybe it was Gifford. For some reason I get those two confused.

Indeed! Hopefully one of you can send the idea to the person who needs to get it and not leave things to chance!

I know that we retired his jersey whatever that means, but does anyone else think that we should actually retire his number now? I know es wore 17 and they wanted to pass it down to Jeremy Johnson but don was the original 17 and I would love to see it officially retired.

While I do not disagree with this sentiment, we had a ceremony for Dandy Don when we retired his jersey. He attended the game, was announced to the crowd and awarded a framed jersey. If we were ever going to retire his number permanently, we certainly should have done it while he was alive in order that he could have received the full appreciation. I just get the impression that SMU is not going to retire numbers, only jerseys.

And I do agree to a helmet or jersey decal for the upcoming season.

I remember us having the ceremony for dandy don where we retired his jersey, but I just think it should be retired permanently unless we did something to honor him similar to levias. It's just one of those things that I just don't get about how smu says they will only retire jerseys, but not the number when you will never see anyone wear 37 or 19 again. I just feel that dandy don deserves to be in the same class as doak and ed

If you look at any college football roster most years, there are so many players that it's nearly impossible to have enough numbers to go around. Yes, you see some numbers duplicated, but those two players can never be on the field at the same time. Sounds simple, but how are the coaches supposed to know when a kids come in as freshman that you will never, ever put those particular two on the field at the same time? If you have more than just 1-2 numbers duplicated, how difficult does that become?

Think about it, the Cowboys have only retired a handful of numbers, and they only need 53 to fill their roster. PLUS, those players were on the team for usually well over a decade. With college, players are only around for 3-4 years, so the sheer number of guys that come through the doors and contribute at a high level is simply going to be too great to fully retire maybe more than 1-2 numbers EVER.

It sure sounds like a great thing to do, but honestly, I have no problem with not retiring numbers completely. I would rather our coaching staff spend their time on X's & O's vs. coming up with a diagram on which players they can give certain numbers to.
