JUCO Recruiting Questions

Postby Hilltop » Thu Dec 09, 2010 11:25 am

Can anyone explain how JUCO's count against our recruiting class? I know that on signing day we have 25 spots to fill, but I wasn't sure if JUCO's some how counted against spots in junior or senior classes that might have opened up as a result of kids not making grades or transferring out or if they still count against our 25 slots.

Since we lost so many signees from the 2010 class to academics, injuries and quitting and a bunch never enrolled, we likely have some space to add a few recruits at midterm. If we sign a JUCO who is eligible to enter SMU in January and we are still under our 25 limit from 2010(minus the academic and injury losses) then the mid-term recruits can be count backward to the 2010 class and would not need to be counted for the 2011 25 man limit. However, many of our JUCOs have been spring signees in the past (usually non-qualifiers who had to graduate from JUCOs to transfer). Spring JUCO transfers will count toward the 2011 Class limit. Also, you need to throw in the 85 man limit into the calculation as well.

What happens when a school signs over 25 expecting some of the recruits not to qualify, and then all of the recruits end up qualifying?

Then you have what is commonly referred to as one of those 'Oh [deleted]' moments.
Actually, I would think they might then 'grey shirt' a couple of them. I don't believe a grey shirt counts against the 25.

Thank you for the information. I was just trying to figure out how some of the JUCO players we have been making offers to over the last couple of weeks would work into our plans over the next year.

Speaking of JUCO's does anyone know about the guys from the 2009 Class that didn't qualify? Beck Coulter et al. I know there were updates in the past on their performance but haven't seen anything recently.

Any big athletic D line JC candidates? This staff has filled that hole with JC's in the past with success - not sure we can have enough of those dudes.

I have not heard of anyone yet, but it will be interesting to see what happens during this window.

On another note, it sounds like Connor Preston will be here for the Spring Semester which is great news. I'm not sure which class his scholarship for the Spring comes out of, but I do believe he counts against the 85 man roster and thus fills a spot that a possible JUCO could have gone into. As I mentioned, I'm in favor of getting Preston in here early, I am just commenting on how it might impact open spots for JUCO's in the spring as well.
