Interesting DMN Tidbits

Postby Stallion » Fri Jul 30, 2004 10:21 am

The DMN reported today that Bennett said that Jessie Henderson and DeMyron Martin will NOT be redshirted. I wonder where they will play. I got a feeling that to get Henderson on the field he will be used as a receiver in the spread offense. Put him and 4.3 speed in the slot along with Devan Lowery and his 4.37 speed and don't forget Fred Turner with his sub 4.4 speed and we may have some real home-run threats at least at Inside Receiver. Martin is a little more difficult to project into the lineup behind Foy Munlin and Richuel Massey. But you know I'm sick of losing-this losing streak must be stopped immediately if we hope to continue to compete in recruiting so I applaud the move-plus Martin was the guy I was most tickled to get in last years recruiting class. If he improves as much this year as he did last year at Allen then we may have a real recruiting steal. Also, Bennett called LB Johnnie Fitzgerald the best athlete on the team with 4.4 speed and a 40 inch vertical-surely there is a way to get a LB with 4.4 speed on the field. We could actually have 3-4 LBs in Cleveland, Rico Harris, Fitzgerald and Muse who actually run in the 4.6 range or below-don't think we've ever had that before

What a positive post Stallion!!

I want/need/desire to see W's now.

I understand linemen redshirting but not most of the little guys.

The article also indicates that Alexander Webb was admitted to SMU academically, but chose to stay at NW, which is different from the speculation I remember reading on this board.

Some real depth at RB will be nice. Since Munlin is a senior, I like the idea of getting some carries this year for Martin if he is ready. Kincade was a workhorse for us, but we have actually been quite thin at RB the past few years, particularly with the injury to Shan the Man. Is Shans career definitely over? Did he stay at SMU and on track to graduate? I am drawing a blank.

I would love to have had Webb because he was an absolute player at Highland Park I thought. However, as long as Chris Phillips stays healthy, I think we've got our man at qb.

the issue with Webb wasn't his admission to SMU rather it was reported in Texas Football that he decided not to transfer to SMU because he would lose a significant number of his credit hours if he did.

I agree with Henderson at WR. But I wonder if the major reason is to give us a return specialist?

I think Fitz will stay at saftey because we don't have enough depth there. DMN listed him as a LB, but he was playing saftey by the end of the spring.

Martin is interesting. Dorsey is the "third down back", but I wonder if there is some concern about Massey and the injuries he has had? Martin could have the redshirt taken off in order to push him. Another thought is that Brown is our only fullback, either Martin or Massey will need to back him up. Martin is a pretty big guy at 6 - 2, 200, anyone think he could be moved to LB? Not saying it is a great idea because he obviously did well for Allen, but just a thought. With the injury to Carrington, and Lee moving back inside, we aren't deep at strong side linebacker. My thought is that either Martin would move to saftey and Fitz to linebacker or Fitz stay at saftey and Martin to LB.

So he went back to NW and decided not to play FB anymore, rather than have 3 years of eligibility at SMU.

There's a good chance we might have two true freshmen (Henderson and Haynes) returning kickoffs, both of whom were amazing at it in HS. Granted, college is played in a faster gear, but a lot of that is instinctive. Leave Blake Warren back there returning punts, and you have a real weapon on special teams.

Not sure about DeMyron Martin. Munlin is the man at tailback. On the post-spring depth chart, Cedrick Dorsey is listed at #2 TB, and Massey at #2 FB (behind Derron Brown). Where does Martin fit? I would think as talented as he is, you redshirt him and let him start fresh after Munlin graduates. (I'm also a little surprised that Coach Bennett would announce who's not going to redshirt when 2-a-days haven't started and he hasn't coached these guys at all, except in camps.)

And as for Stallion's idea about the 3-4 LBs .... that would be very interesting to see. But Coach Bennett and Coach Gush are 4-3 guys all the way, aren't they (see their defenses at KState, etc.)? Plus, didn't Coach Bennett say yesterday that Cory Muse will get some time at DE? If that's the case, then they're definitely staying in a 4-3.

I wasn't talking about a 3-4 defense just that there were 3 or 4 LBs who can run 4.6 and under.

I'm not surprised to hear about Henderson, because if he's got big play capability we need him on the field. We may line up a lot of little guys with more speed and quickness than we've seen since Comet's frosh year (before injuries). The problem is going to be keeping those guys healthy. I like having the 3 speed burners.

The Martin comment surprised me. Makes me wonder if we are going to see a lot of 2 back sets this year. I hate to think of wasting a RS year if he's only going to get 3-4 carries a game, but as Stallion syas...the time to win is NOW and anyone who can help needs to be available.

I get the impression coach Bennett is looking for a way to find Fitzgerald more playing time. He was buried on the depth chart at RB and may really help our depth at safety. Against WAC teams where smaller, faster LBs aren't going to take a physical beating, the idea of Fitzgerald competing for time at LB is an interesting thought. I love the thought af LBs with closing speed and I assume anyone who has played RB and safety is physical enough to enjoy the challenge.

It's been written both ways so many times: is Fitz a safety or linebacker? Coming out of spring, he was listed as Nnabuife's backup at free safety.

I have been told by someone who has talked with both Coach Bennett and the SMU administration that the reason he stayed at NW is because of personal reasons, nothing to do with his hours.
