Had it been someone more media savvy, like a Ron Meyer, the interview would never ended as it did. hitch, Collins and Parker were not media savvy and it showed.

Hitch picked the coach to replace Meyer and didn't seriously entertain any other coach. There were some of us that wanted someone a bit more schooled in SWC and Dallas media. It didn't happen.

So much for the what ifs involved in all this. The bad news is it a happen. The worse facts are that Pye tried to destroy football. The beauty of the story is the current redemption and success.

I can't wait for another positive chapter added to the SMU story with a win Dec 30th.

Absolutely. I remember at the time ED was trying to tell the NCAA that UT and A@M made SMU cheating look like small change, but they wouldn't listen to him and focused only on us. A couple of years later a pretty ugley ticket re-sale scandal at UT came to light, but the NCAA took no action at all. Typical. I have lived in Austin and the UT campus areafor 20 years, and I can tell you that there are numerous places around here where UT players never have to pick up a check. It is blatant and shameless and the NCAA doesnt care one whiff.[/quote]

see one Deloss Dodd, rich ties to ncaa enforcement committee, at that time and since, et al.

BTW, DeLoss just awarded himelf and others in UT athletics administration hefty pay raises despite the fact that the Legislature is getting ready to cut academics pretty severely. Its a shame the UT brand has been hijacked by a bunch of money hungry pencil pushers. I feel like money generated by UT football belongs to the University and should go into programs for students, not into bloated salaries.

not to re-open the Spanish-adjunct-debates-of athletic-coach's-salaries, but UT athletics is a MAJOR revenue-generating source for the university, and the ncaa by proxy...got no problem with their folks compensating whatever amount they choose...free-market theory at its best...it works in a wonderfully Darwinian manner....

as long as everyone has access to the same market. Hmmm.

Dodd, to his singular credit, has advanced the Texas cause to the exclusion of any history/rivalry/tradition or theorem. The other Big 12 (-2) schools got a lesson in that this past Spring. He would have Texas in whatever conference that is most profitable, or alone if it is financially feasible. While not the anti-christ in SMU's little fiasco, he looked out for Texas' interest with absolute impunity during that scenario, and carries enormous clout in Austin today as well as Kansas during that day.

except of course we subsidize the University of Texas since it is a public institution not a private enterprise

and as such we have access to information on said compensation...BTW, I do my best to not subsidize the 'Horns any more than is legally necessary.

But within the University, that one area (Athletics, in particular UT football) is singularly carrying not only its own weight, but several Spanish department adjunct salaries, chemistry department lab supplies, et al. Would it be advisable/functional to find the folks that are able to retain this largess annually, paying them what the market bears, or perhaps find the least expensive and most highly qualified B-school grad to 'take over the ship.'

The UT "model" works...largely because they have folks (like Dodd) that are singular in purpose, and ruthless in practice. No complaint from me, as long as that field of competition is founded on level ground...I would contend it is not now, and has not been for some time.

But not the Texas athletic department.

http://ncaafootball.fanhouse.com/2009/0 ... s-revenue/

In the 2007-08 athletic year, UT had a profit of over $19M, and now they have a TV network bringing in $12M/year. Deloss Dodds has managed to harness all the resources that being the University of the state of Texas brings with it, and has absolutely earned whatever raise he gets.

For those of you who think College Athletics is a buisiness, well, here you go - Dodds is running a company who makes a massive profit and is set to make more. And for those of you, like me, who think it is an extension of the University, a way to enhance student life, exposure and pride of your school, well that's happening too.

I recall watching an interview with ED around the time of the death penalty. He said when the NCAA was questioning him he tried to tell them about Texas, etc and what they offered, and the NCAA guy said "Why would Texas have to offer a ball player anything to go there?" ED said they didn't WANT to hear about any other school!

After watching Thad's marvelous story, a wanted to B%$##h slap Dale Hansen and hug Vern Lundquist!

Great film -Thad. It certainly was very well done and you deserve credit for seeing it through. I know it was a labor of love, but also very tough to put together. The fact that you got as many of these guys to talk was impressive and getting them to be as open as they were was a feat in and of itself. Hopefully, we'll keep on moving up the ladder and show the world that there is life after the death penalty.

They were awesome, but I still like the darker shade worn in the 1983 Cotton Bowl.

I think that the 80s Royal was a different shade than the royal uniforms we wore in 2008, but that might just be differences in camera technology

That's probably the reason.

My Aunt used to work for E! doing graphic design for Talk Soup and other shows and she showed my how much colors are distorted by TV...but this was 12 years ago, before HD was out.
