My favorite voices from Pony Excess

Postby Mitch McConnell » Mon Dec 13, 2010 11:22 am

Eric Dickerson and Skip Bayless.

For Dickerson, it was mentioned elsewhere but I loved his honesty (especially how he ripped Texas) and the way he read the David Stanley meeting at Campissi's (sp?). And no one can question his loyalty to the school. So while he may have received something, he loves the school and basically told Orsini that it's really important for those players to re-connect to the school. Give Orsini credit for doing that and leaning on ED on the June Jones connection. That goes far in my book.

For Bayless, he is a lightning rod, but I really enjoyed the perspective he gave of Ron Meyer, the walking into the monday morning boardroom meeting and then how he mentioned about how so much cheating was going on that everybody in the media had become somewhat immune to it.

Again, this perspective is coming from somebody who only first stepped on the SMU campus in June of 1985.

I agree with your assessment of ED. In fact and I am sure that everyone already knows this, but Juney reached out to ED about coming to SMU. Thank god for him, and I really want to find a retro SMU ED jersey to wear around.

I did love the enthusiasm of the former players about reconnecting with the program after being shunned for a quarter century. I'm glad Steve-O reached out to ED and others. I must admit, I'm surprised how much ED loved SMU. That was the most illuminating part of the movie. Ron Meyer was fun to see again. I interviewed him right after he was hired when I worked for the DC. He was as enthusiastic a coach, as I have ever met. There's one face, that I'm surprised didn't show up, and perhaps he wouldn't talk. Russ Potts. I've always wondered what role he played if any.

I think I told you guys that I was the third guy in a conversation between Meyer and Endicott at the Harvey Armstrong function earlier this year. It was an education, let me tell you.

yeah Mustang Mania wasn't mentioned and yet it played a huge part in creating the energy around Ron Meyer's program. I doubt we get those great recruiting classes w/o Mustang Mania. Remember we had 6,000 fans for a game in 1975

There is so much that can't be captured in a film spanning about a decade and so complex in its detail.

Thad did a great job capturing what he could given the constrains. But it is near impossible to really capture the atmosphere of Dallas back then.

It wasn’t just Mustang Mania. Lone Star had a bumper sticker that went something like Mustangs and Long Necks, no place but Dallas. Dallas itself was nothing but pure energy. Just an incredible time to be in Dallas and SMU was able to take advantage of that spirit.

Meyer was a media guru and we got all kinds of pub. We had several reporters in the locker rooms (practices and at games). Guys that knew us and we knew them. They knew a lot more about the team chemistry and respected that some things were not public but part of our team chemistry. A symbiotic relationship that just didn’t seem to exist post Meyer (until Jones).

It was a fabulous time to be a part of SMU and Dallas.

Wow, I got one of those on ebay 3-4 years ago for like $24, glad I got it when I did! I wore it watching the Hawaii Bowl last year, so I'll have to break it out for the AFBowl this year.

Does anyone know if any of the infamous "banned boosters" have been un-banned?

It doesn't seem like these guys were rogue boosters going against the school, they were following the direction of the board of governers and doing what was considered standard SWC recruiting practices. Some of them may not be any risk whatsoever to come back and give us money, if they would still want to.

Perhaps this is why the Circle of Champions member list is not public?

ED's quote about how he enjoyed playing football at SMU more than he ever enjoyed playing ball in high school or in the pros should be shown to every prospective recruit...

I would imagine a lot of NFL players would say they enjoyed their college days more than the NFL. In the NFL it's a business and they take alot of the fun out of it.
