I can't believe that coaches can get that kind of buyout in their contracts. Absolutely ridiculous amount of money. This puts all the risk on the school, and very little on the coach. If the coach goes 2-10, he can rest easy because either his buy out is way too much for him to get canned, or he'll get his ridiculous buyout and be set. Just another piece of evidence showing what's wrong with "amateur" athletics.

that may be the cost due to Arkansas if he leaves.

I think you are right.

Thats awesome that they put a huge buyout for Petrino! Lol they probably told him in his interview that they would hire him, but since they still didnt trust him they would make it impossible for him to leave for a while.

Vanderbilt is job worth having, despite its poor record in the semi-professional SEC. If you execute on your plan perfectly, .500 is the most you can expect. Even making a bowl would be huge for the Commodores. Administration and alumni expectations are modest, which permits someone to have a very long career, if they want. If it is a stepping stone, neither party will be happy (remember Gary Barnett at Northwestern, who then tanked at Colorado).

In summary, Vanderbilt FB is more like Duke and Northwestern, but the right coach could help it become a Stanford.

For the best, Malzahn could probably do better.

A tale of two HS coaches: Both from large-classification powerhouses with multiple championships. Both with a high-profile QB at the helm their last couple of years at a high school. Both seen as offensive innovators.

One is Todd Dodge, the other Gus Malzahn.

I think Gus is making the correct choice. Vanderbilt is not a destination that I find particularly appealing.

All of my buddies from Vandy are hoping they now land Maryland offensive coordinator James Franklin.
