I think team USA is pretty much an embarrassment thus far. They need a last second shot to beat a team that didn’t make the Olympics last year. They were destroyed by Italy on Tuesday. This just proves that the obsession with ‘street hoops’ is killing basketball in the United States. Any time the US plays a team with any kind of defense, the team really seems to struggle. I suppose we will see if team USA has a chance when they play Serbia-Montenegro on Thursday. I found myself rooting against team USA today, partly because I like Dirk better than any player on team USA, and because of people like Allen Iverson. I’m really pissed he was the one to make the last second shot. This is the guy who made a totally idiotic statement guaranteeing gold in Athens for team USA. He’s also the guy who looked quite foolish after the game on Tuesday. Maybe he'll start showing up to practice.

Somebody explain to me how this group of NBA stars barely squeaks by Puerto Rico, gets killed by Italy, and inks an undeserved W from what ought to have been a seriously overmanned German team. The balance of power in the basketball world is slowly shifting.

I am as American as they come. I love my country. But I get not a little joy in seeing these guys come off their self assigned pedastals.

Team USA's plotted path of crash and burn is not remotely about the balance of world basketball power shifting, although other nations have certainly gotten stronger. It is about the oxymoron TEAM USA. We have seen enough of this in the last several years to know what the results are.

Actually, I think Carmelo Anthony - and then LeBron James - made the gold-medal guarantee. But your point is well taken. Iverson (who I actually like) sat there by Coach Brown after the Italy game and said that game would serve as a wake-up call, and was just what the team needed. I think the fact that they didn't run Germany off the court is as (if not more) embarrassing as the loss to Italy. That's the way this group responds to a wake-up call? Maybe all the talk about Coach Brown being the best coach alive will stop now.
