Why would they? You need to face the fact that the highly recruited non-qualifier who goes the JUCO route wants to end up at OU or UT or Colorado, not SMU. And they never will. The only reason SMU was listed 20 years ago was payola. Face the facts, man.

ALEX LIFESON wrote:Should be a great addition, although i'm sure he will brought along slowly since he hasn't played in two years. I think Mouton has the jersey #95. Keep an eye out for a few position changes in the next several days, should be interesting!
He wore 95 Saturday, but I overheard someone saying he's going to switch to 50-something. According to the last roster I saw:
50: Caleb Peveto
51: Cole Horton
52: Avery Cleveland
53: Reggie Carrington
55: Lucky DeLay
56: Brandon Bonds
57: Lando Dyer
58: Darrin Johnson
59: Heath Burnett
So maybe Mouton will be wearing #54?
This is fantastic news! Great job, guys. I'll be eager to see how fast he develops into a serious player.

Um .... what? Stallion wrote:.... But, not one of our JUCOs compares in reputation to one of the 5-6 or so JUCOs signed by Tech or TCU for instance....
Get over the "reputation" hang-up! Either he can play or he can't. And since he hasn't suited up in two years, nobody knows exactly how good he'll be. However, I do trust Coach Bennett and his staff in their ability to recruit players, and damn good ones. Not just the young guys who have arrived at SMU since Coach Bennett's arrival -- look at the players he recruited at his previous schools. I'd say he can evaluate talent, as can his staff. And I promise you the coaches don't give a rat's you-know-what about how many "stars" some computer nerd assigned to a player. It's a good way to get a feel for a guy's basic promise/upside/potential, but for every 5-star guy who becomes a star, there are several 5-star busts and one-star guys who emerge into players. Stallion wrote:.... Hell, I thought Bennett was quoting me when he said last winter when he said he hopes to sign 3-4 JUCOs a year....
Well of course -- he relies on you for recruiting advice, you know. How he was able to recruit players to Kansas State or A&M before you crossed his path, I don't know. Just lucky, I guess. Don't hurt your shoulder patting yourself on the back.
Sorry - I don't mean to dogpile you here, because you obviously spend a lot of time reading about recruiting. But every player arrives at every college with a reputation -- good or bad. But it's what they do after they arrive that matters.

I'll tell you exactly how Bennett has had success-by recruiting under a Model which allowed him to sign minimum NCAA qualifiers from all sources availiable including an incredible number of the exact JUCOs so many on this board have a problem with. K-State without question would be bringing up the rear of the Big 12 North without those players. And jtstang please stick to a subject you know the slightest thing about-perhaps the Boulevard-OR explain to us all how TCU signed such an outstanding crop of JUCOs last year.

Once again, I was very disappointed with the amount of coverage the Morning News gives SMU, just a couple of sentences that says Mouton's on the team. I like the Watkins guy who covers the Ponies, I suppose, but I always wish they'd let him cover us like we should be in our own hometown paper. Therefore, I'm infinitely grateful for this site.
Great news, adding Mouton! When's the last time we had three DTs with the size and strength that he, Bonds and Mouton bring?

Last night was fo a different reason.
Go Mustangs and I want to see this kid play NOW. That is if he is in condition. I am sure that after two years he wants to HIT someone.

Hate to get into this SMU lovefest going on. but TCU did get a great group of JUCO's. Drew Coleman (who unfortunately wrecked his knee and is out for 2004) and Quincy Butler were JUCO all-american's at DB and are excellent cover guys. Butler was a 5 star recruit and Top 25 per Rivals(Coleman did not play in 2003). In addition, TE Brent Hecht was an All-American & Top 50 recruit, Zarnell Fitch (NT) had origianlly signed with Tennessee and went through spring ball with them in 2003 earning a starting position before coaches found out he was one hour short on credits (JUCO all-american 2002), Chris Hayes (DE) led all SW JUCO's with 12 QB sacks. Finally, a late signee, Jesse Henjy was all Cali JUCO at LB and will be converted to DE (he was also academic all-american and is a fitness freak).
You should see Logo Tevaseu & Jesse Hejny. Physically as imposing players you will ever see for kids there size.

On a different note, is our Mouton related to the Mouton of Horns bball fame?

good post stallion. even the kids themselves sometimes confuse getting letters from a school as having had offers from a school.

And sometime they do not confuse the letters they get. And sometimes they don't confuse what they want to do. I remember a kid named Seneca Wallace, who was heavily recruited. Every school wanted him to change positions. He absolutely did not want to change, so off to Sac City to further prove his case. And guess what? Well, if you know college ball then you know the story.
I'm am not implying he is a Wallace type, but if he is coming to SMU to help, if he wants to play, if he is that big, then good for SMU. There are plenty of diamonds in the rough. Look at a Pat Tillman. Even sometimes all the big coaches and alll the big recruiting services can get it a bit wrong. Look at a Ronald Curry. He was supposed to be the great QB. He was good, but not the hype in college, now he's a hard working, but struggling WR in the pros.
Why bash the kid? Lets see what he is made of. Let's have some HOPE.
Go Ponies!

I'd like to congratulate Mouton for choosing SMU! His comment about wanting to help change things at SMU for the better shows commitment! Welcome to the Hilltop!
