Local lineman considering PoniesBlake Kerley
Center Garland (South Garland), Texas Height: 6-foot-2 Weight: 262 pounds 40-yard dash: 5.43 seconds Schools of interest: Oklahoma State, TCU, Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Ohio State, SMU
Hoss - Yes, Okie State has done well in the Metroplex this year, but I seriously doubt they will ever beat OU or UT for the top talent in the state by signing day. As a supporter of the Sooners in addition to my Stangs, OU has already recieved oral committments from two of the top rated WR's in Texas. Of OU's 11 early committments, only 5 are from TX (others are from OK, SC, AZ, KS) and are all rated 4 star recruits according to Rivals. Additionally, Stoops & Co. is starting to pull more top talent from other parts of the country which has opened up room for teams like the Cowpokes in D/FW. SMU also needs to be able to capitalize on this opportunity.
what source did that come from? It's pretty exact 5.43. I noticed that one of the services has been posting the times from the NIKE College Station camp but if you look closely they commented that manyof the times came during a torrential rain storm. Another kid we offered who committed to Houston-Jerrod Butler is listed at something like 5.61 in the 40 which is completely out of line with other reports on his quickness. Kerley is a Texas Football First Team Super Team member.
If he's that size and really ran in a downpour, then Stallion's right that he might be better than those numbers indicate. Running in a storm is a pain, and more importantly, traction is awful. To me (and admittedly, I'm no coach/scout), that sounds like a decent time for rain-running. Good point, Stallion.
i promise to have a better attitude when we win one but....why are we going after a recruit that has OSU, TEXAS and OKLAHOMA at the top of his list. please tell me we arent spending much time here. now...if these are just dream schools for the kid that is something altogether different, but if he has had offers from them we are pissin in the wind.
yeah that time came from the Nike College Station camp so its hard to tell if its legit. Some OLM ran a 5.0+ but at least 15 ran slower than Kerley. Without knowing the exact conditions it was run under it might be suspect.
marginal?? peruna, there are 200 kids out there that are not in the top 200 in the state that would improve us right now. it's fine to target one or two that we have a legit shot at (hall) but, we need to find those kids that can come here and in 3 yrs. be players. in the mean time...back at the ranch... use the young kids that we have (and keep them happy) and throw in the juco's that will help NOW. we have a few outstanding recruiters on staff...lets not waste them chasing ghosts.
Tom Rossley and Forrest Gregg already tried recruiting 25 nobodies a year. They ended up winning about 20% of their games. You got to go after the best-every year some great prospects will slide to schools like SMU. The best quality Phil Bennett has is that he ain't afraid of going after the top prospect-which is refreshing around. He easily had "some" interest from more Top 100 kids this year than ever before-but 0-12 made some good early groundwork go down the drain.
a couple of wins this year will change that in a hurry. SMU has a lot to sell but clearly our record these past 15 years will scare a lot of guys away. Got to prove we CAN win before the top guys will get more interested. I believe progress is being made, but this is a 4-5 year process for any new coach and Bennett took some pretty hard hits his 1st two years. Anyone can see we have a more athletic 2-deep than we've seen in years and most of those guys will be around for a while.
