Fans Asked To Show Support For U.S. Military, Wear Black

Dec. 24, 2010

DALLAS (SMU) - As a tribute to the Armed Forces and the U.S. Military Academy, SMU is calling for a "Blackout" and asking fans to wear black for the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl. Known as the Black Knights, Army will be taking on SMU in the post-season bowl on Dec. 30 at 11 a.m. at Gerald J. Ford Stadium.

"While we recognize that they may be our opponent for this game, we want to show our thanks and appreciation to the Armed Forces and the U.S. Military Academy and its student-athletes for their service to our great nation," said SMU Director of Athletics Steve Orsini. "This will serve as a tribute to service men and women across the globe for all their sacrifices to protect our freedoms."

Black SMU apparel is on now sale at the SMU Barnes & Noble Bookstore (3060 Mockingbird Lane, Dallas, TX 75205) and online from TeamFanShop here.

SMU also announced that as a special tribute to legendary Mustang quarterback and television broadcaster Don Meredith, who died Dec. 5, the Mustangs will wear a special "17" sticker on their helmets for the game. Meredith was a two-time All-America selection (1958 & 1959) on the Hilltop, setting a Southwest Conference record with a 69.6 completion percentage in 1957.

Instead of wearing "black to honor the military, why not donate cellphone time to troops so they can call home and speak to love ones or donate toys for military kids whose mom or dad are overseas. Something along those lines would have a bigger impact than wearing a black shirt for three hours.

Something like that would make more sense. I'm not sure how wearing black honors the military.

I'm a young alum/letterwinner and do not like the idea of wearing black. Wear red or blue at home, white on the road and keep it simple. If you wear black you better win by 40!

Looks like the smumustangs.com shop has too much "Black Inventory." What a terrible time to push sales for this certain color of items. In fact it is a joke! I wouldn't mind if we were wearing black jerseys, but the truth is we are most likely not. Blackout = Just an excuse to push overstocked inventory that is not selling because it looks trashy! I hate the t-shirts for sale on smumustangs.com... Why can't we just sell nicer looking name brand athletic apparel, I don't know maybe more Adidas stuff (since they are the official outfitter!)

The bookstore has a lot of black shirts. They knew there was going to be a black out and got prepared. There are also black jerseys for the game.

You can't get more Patriotic than Red,White, & Blue in support of our Military and SMU.....Unless the players came up with this black uniform idea and really want to wear them over school colors for fun in this game, it sure seems like a Stupid marketing idea if SMU came up with this idea for this game. Obviously, pure controversy with fans who are proud of our school colors are rediculous to start with. SMU does not need another distraction like this for the game. We seriously need a New Marketing Director who understands first that potential dividing issues with the long time real fans we have is not a wise choice.
