I know you just saw this post but don't you think I would have been searching high and low for a school district that would be okay with H1-B's? I know they are out there because I did my research but they are all for high demand - science, math and bilingual Spanish. As a certified social studies teacher, I'm obviously none of those...And as far as private schools - (1) not hiring SS (2) really low pay as in I would not be able to make a living (3) needs x number of years of experience.

Now, can we talk about how there's an important football game tomorrow?

Okay well as for the replies that popped up while I was making a reply...
While I have the money and resources to come back as a tourist, I'm just not comfortable living off of my parents for so long like that. I understand that special education endorsement would increase my chances infinitely but that's not what I'm passionate about and I'm pretty sure you should be passionate about helping SpEd students if that's what you're going to get licensed in. I'm also not comfortable with pursuing a masters just yet, I'd like to get some teaching experience before grad school. Does it suck that I can't stay in the US? Absolutely, but at the same time, I also know that it isn't the end of the world. Am I optimistic? Yeah, I guess, I mean it is what it is and I tried what I could while I was in Dallas and it didn't work out. So I'll have to figure something out. Did I submit my resume to districts I'd never heard of - absolutely. To this day, I still have no idea where on earth some of those districts were but that's okay.

No it's valid for 1 year unless your degree falls under STEMM designated majors like Engineering or Computers. Mine expired but I was able to stay here legally for 60 days then went to grad school and surprisingly halfway through the semester I found an employer that sponsored me. The ultimate goal is to have some sort of legal status or cushion to fall back on until the work permit is issued. Immigration does not care how many visas you have nor they give a s what kind of visa they are as long as you have the legality the stay here and an employer willing to sponsor then they will give the h1b.

I was just trying to shed light on getting an h1b as a teacher. It wasn't my intention to ask you to get licensed in SpEd. I'm not a sped teacher either I was just infoming. Maybe it's just me but I always liked taking risks. Anyway, good luck on your future plans.

Thanks for the shoutout, I'm alive and well but can't say the same for everybody else in Japan. It's getting harder to watch the news and seeing all of the damage but if anything, we are probably one of the more, if not most, earthquake ready nation so we can pick up the pieces...The earthquake itself was only a strong 5 where I live but I have never experienced something so scary - EVER!!! It's absolutely devastating seeing the damage on TV and to think it's in places only a couple hundred miles away is just heartbreaking. We didn't have it as bad here in Tokyo as they did in other places around Japan - please keep them in your thoughts!

8.9 is a monster lasting up to 5 min. Tsunami will no doubt be responsible for the majority of the fatalities.

I've been in Acapulco on the 6th floor of the Malibu in a 5.9 that lasted 30 seconds. And many others in ACA but can't imagine a 8.9 coupled with water. Stay safe girl ..

I dealt with these matter extensively prior to my retirement and find INS law to be totally exasperating. I worked for the Federal Government as a resonably high ranking offiial and could not assist foreign nationals who risked their lives spying at the behest of the United States or assisted in providing information to bring down major international criminal operations. I could demonstrate major contributions to the national security of the US as well as significant impact to the safety and security of the US and US citizens. Despite assistance by these persons both in and outside the US, I could invoke no influence on the INS as there was no INS law in place to assest these patriots. In roughly 1985 special bill was passed in Congress allowing the Department of Justice to review 100 applicants a year from all government law enforcement agencies, the military, State Department....etc. for the grant of legal status for these persons as sponsored by their respective government agency. The DOJ took the stance these cases were a pain in the butt and rarely would process more than 10-12 a year which was a travesty. Come illegally across the border and we do nothing, but risk your life for the US and very little could be done. Bottom line is that I identified several former INS employees in private law practice and threw everything into their hand and we waited out the process over tedious years. Our immigration law is a disaster.

Spot on analysis. Our adoption of two biologic brother/sister in 1998 was a nightmare that continued through 2006. INS workers (not unlike IRS) do not have a uniform understanding of the regs they are charged to interpret and enforce. My son (going to work for the state of Florida) found out that after following all the steps, completing the forms, and then driving 3 hours over to J'ville to be sworn in, the INS officer there said "you filled out the wrong form". When asked why he simply didn't say this on the phone and save my family a 3 hour trip, the official just shrugged and smiled.

Couple of phone calls later same official grumpily said his "supervisor" was going to 'make an exception' and swear him in as a citizen.

Changed what should have been a great day into frustration exclusively.

Prayers continue for this young Mustang lady, her family, and her nation...and for SamuraiStang as well.
