JJ talking to Maryland. I don't blame him.I don't Blame JJ. SMU has the worst in stadium experience of any D1 team in the country. Sure the boulevard is fun, but going to the games pretty much sucks except for the hardcore fans that were there in the glory days.(who still mostly leave at the end of the 3rd regardless of how close the game is) My girlfriends whole family couldn't believe how lame and quiet it was at the Washington State I brought them to.(This actually goes back like 3 girlfriends, always got the same response: my high school games were more fun..) Same goes to all my other friends I have brought to games over the years. At the Marshall game my brother saw some SMU fans that were loudly cheering told to sit down!!
Seems JJ still isn't getting a lot of the recruits in he should be. Like the OL that was turned down last year after being accepted into other schools. Then to top it off everyone [deleted] about things like geldings or black uniforms! There has been a lot of schools this year wearing black for a game. Isn't Oregon wearing them in the nc game? TCU is wearing black and red in the Rose Bowl. Tech and Utah both wore black/camo jerseys. The problem is... No young fans. Smu lost 20 years of fans. So all we hear is from a few guys stuck in the 70's and 80's . Other than the TCU game we average about 200 students in the student section! Very Lame. Even my 4A small town High School had more. I was born in 85. Been to SMU games all my life. We moved in 95 and I only made it to a few games a year. The way it worked out I always seemed to make it to games we lost. Maybe thats because my dad only ever wanted to go see games vs old SWC foes or TCU. Even as a student in 04 and 05 I never saw us win 1 game in person! I just saw thrashings like 31-10 to La Tech. I did get to hear the last second hail mary against UAB on the ticket though! Like I said I always went to the wrong games . I almost went to the 05 TCU game but went hunting instead . Back to the point. Other than Sam Houston I had not seen us even win a d1 game in person since The 41-16 Houston win in 1992!!!! So to have JJ here is a huge blessing. It is amazing how fast people forget how terrible we have been. There has probably been 100 times I have told people in Texas I went to SMU, and they had never heard of it. So I can't even imagine how few football recruits out of state (or in state) are familiar with the program. I cant imagine very many people not knowing where TCU is... JJ has done an amazing job recruiting, getting our name back out there, and winning games! I personally figured it would be 5 years until we could have a 9 win season. JJ has far exceeded my expectations. We have been the worst team for 20 years. So people [deleted] about 7 wins lose my respect. We should do everything we can to keep JJ and his staff! Re: JJ talking to Maryland. I don't blame him.Wow..never heard any of those bs excuses before...
Thanks for enlightening us...
Re: JJ talking to Maryland. I don't blame him.
Timeout. Your screen name is the score of a game that you chose not to attend? Ridiculous.
Re: JJ talking to Maryland. I don't blame him.
Exactly. We all know about all of this. And JJ is our best hope of finally fixing it. But obviously it will take him a lot longer than 3 years to really get it turned around, and have us consistently cracking the Top 25.Yet when I get on ponyfans I see a lot of JJ naysayers. I guess if he leaves we can hire the Tight Ends coach from some lower tier Big 12 school. People need to give him their full support. And stop [deleted] about little things that have nothing to do with us winning games. And he needs to be given whatever he wants. Just my opinion.
Re: JJ talking to Maryland. I don't blame him.
Who knew Demyron Martin was going to have his one good game that day!?
Re: JJ talking to Maryland. I don't blame him.there are tons of people in california who have never heard of stanford.
we have been off the map for about 20 years. just now getting known again. lost a generation of fans. takes time. we will get there. when we were winning in the 80s i saw lots of fans who didn't go to smu. people flock to a winner.
Re: JJ talking to Maryland. I don't blame him.We do not have the worst stadium experience in D1. Is it great? No, but virtually every Sun Belt, half of CUSA (see Tulane), and for the most part all of the non BCS teams have mediocre fan gameday experience atmosphere. That said, I do not fault June for talking to Maryland. They're a BCS program, state school with a large alumni population, etc. I'm thrilled he was able to resist the urge and is staying at SMU to fulfill his vision.
Back off Warchild seriously.
Re: JJ talking to Maryland. I don't blame him. What if JJ left and we hired Todd graham? Do you think he could keep things going?
Our replacement for JJ will not be an unproven commodity...
Re: JJ talking to Maryland. I don't blame him.Not to mention the fact that most people pull their name from a job when they aren't going to get it...Maybe he realized that Under Armour would be pulling all the strings and black jersey's weren't going to fly, and the terp was not going to be replaced by godzilla.....
The grass is not always greener...
Re: JJ talking to Maryland. I don't blame him.Todd Graham wouldn't leave Tulsa for SMU.
That said if June decided to leave we would be able to have a much better candidate pool to chose from. Best case scenario June stays through 2015 or whenever and we aren't in a position where we have to money whip a coach to come here. Back off Warchild seriously.
Re: JJ talking to Maryland. I don't blame him.Todd Graham would be on the first plane for DAllas Love if we paid him 2.5 million a year...
Re: JJ talking to Maryland. I don't blame him.
and there you have my choice, should the need arise.
Re: JJ talking to Maryland. I don't blame him.Guy would relish the opportunity to make double/triple? the money and recruit the same kids with better facilities...
Re: JJ talking to Maryland. I don't blame him.
and he's enough of a rpick to not have to worry about people climbing up his [deleted] and beating him down, like it sometimes seems JJ has to put up with
Re: JJ talking to Maryland. I don't blame him.I feel that many people on here underestimate this job...it did suck for awhile, but JJ got us out of a lot of bad stuff and grew a hunger in the community...this is a good job, and a stepping stone job...Certainly a step up from Tulsa...
