Sideline Jog Causes Losses

Postby gostangs » Thu Dec 30, 2010 6:37 pm

O.K. - We have all given this enough time....Now is the time for JJ to give up on this Junior High sideline jog play relay thingy.

The reason no other coach in America does this is because it is stupid. There were several times in the game today that a faster play call would have taken the wind right out of them - we had them very out manned at time on the line. But the sideline chat lets the D catch their breath and get set. It also has to be disruptive and bothersome to the QB - and presses us up against the play clock on virtually every play.

This is the equivelent of Bennett's swinging gate - only dumber since it effects every offensive play. I love JJ, but he is just being stubborn sticking to this antique.

The team has all spring to learn a new play relay system - come on JJ - everyone knows this but you apparently. We win this game if we dont do the "sideline jog"

We take so long to run plays that it gives the defense time to adjust. Look at what Oklahoma does.

our plodding along in general has hurt us more than a couple of times on plays that wind up getting reviewed. Today we were fortunate in that the call was not overturned, but any other offense and they'd just snap the ball and no review would take place. Add that to the list of reasons why the sideline jog doesnt work.

I think JJ out-zens himself sometimes. Look at the reasoning he gave for icing his own kicker. "To tell him to take his time and calm down." Cmon man..

You will have more luck getting the NCAA to allow speakers in the helmets like the pros. That is what he is mimicing. He will not change in my opinion.

We look like slow motion. No sense of urgency.

Makes no sense at all. Call the play without seeing the defense, take all 40 seconds each play when you have momentum or are behind.

Just stupid and shows how stubborn or lazy June is not to update his "mighty" offense.

Now, queue the June Jones [deleted] kissers that feel that 7-7 while losing a 3rd tier bowl game against probably the worst bowl team in the history of the NCAA is a step in the right direction.

No sense of urgency, bad play calling, horrible use of timeouts...but JUNE is DA MAN!

All hail June and the Run and Shoot.
Probaly won't happen...BUT...maybe it will!!

It's not just that the sideline jog kills momentum and allows the defense to get set. It limits the number of plays we can run.

The longer a game like the AFB goes on, the better chances the team with superior talent wins. We lose snaps by taking so much time between plays. I have no doubt that we would have won the game if we could have gotten one more drive in the second half.

Taking so much time between snaps cost us those extra plays we needed at the end.

Yes Hawaii still does this.

I don't see what the hang-up is about this with you SMU fans. We (Hawaii) been doing this for the last 12 years and haven't heard anyone on the Hawaii board complain about it. It may be kinda out-dated in this day and age of hurry-up type of offenses--aka(Oregon). Myself, I just think it's JJ's way of getting camera time and to let everyone know it's HIS offense and HE calls the shots.

But you guys are right about JJ's 2 minute offense, even when he was in Hawaii fans used to complain a lot about the lack of ugency of the coaches and players during this drill. JJ's clock and time-out management was ago in question a lot. Some things never change with the run and shoot offense. If you read the Hawaii board after a loss you will see the same complains about the coaches and players. About the only thing that is not the same between boards is this very topic.

I've noticed what Warbow is saying.

I'm ready to let it go most of the time. Sometimes I wanna go faster and sometimes I wanna go slower. Depends on everything else going on.

Sideline Jog Causes Losses

Postby couch 'em » Thu Dec 30, 2010 10:37 pm

Come on guys, this is a very minor issue and, even if you assume it is a negative, it isn't 'causing' any losses
