They forced out Friedgen for THIS? Yet another guy who can't take Maryland over the hump?

Friedgen was a terrific coach who guided his alma mater to seven wins in 10 years. When his team was obliterated by injuries last year, he slipped to 2-10. As his players got healthy over the offseason, nobody seemed to notice; several publications had Maryland finishing dead last in the ACC this year. All Friedgen did was go 8-4 (9-4 after pounding ECU in the bowl game) and win the Coach of the Year award. Nice going, new AD.

From what I have been told, the school got gunshy about Leach (who reportedly interviewed very well) because of his pending litigation against ESPN. Nobody (at other schools) seems to care that he sued Tech, but many schools, including Maryland, seem leery of hiring a guy who has a lawsuit against ESPN, which owns so many bowls.

By the way, what I saw said Maryland was willing to pay $3.5 million, but I have seen nothing that said the school was willing to offer that salary to Jones or that an actual offer was made. Since all reports suggest that he never got past the search committee, it's safe to say he wasn't fielding offers at all. An exploratory conversation is no different than what each of us would have done in his situation.
