Lavin at St Johns

He was hired in March of 2010 and they are already 11-3 and just beat Nationally ranked Georgetown on National TV tonight?...who says you can't turn a program around quickly and St Johns had similar recruiting hurdles to SMU in a big city environment.

with W's over Westmont, Columbia, Davidson, Wagner, Fordham, St Bonaventure etc.

Tulane is 10-3 too.
I will not make age an issue in this campaign. I'm not going to exploit for political purposes my opponent's youth and inexperience.

Point taken---- but beating ranked Georgetown in Madison Square Garden in his FIRST year?......SMU would have had to beat Nationally ranked Memphis in AA Center in Dallas Dohs first year to match that. St Johns is already 3-0 in Conference play though.

They are also 3-0 in the Big East with wins over @West Virginia, @Providence, & G-Town. They are a pretty good team and have an amazing recruiting class on the way.

St. John's beat St. Bonaventure? Someone ought to fix that in their record, then.

Tulane has 7 D-1 wins, an RPI of 255, and a strength of schedule in the 300s.

St. Johns has an RPI of 10 and an SOS of 9.

He got a Top 50 Class right away and hired an outstanding coaching staff including Ex Purdue coach Keady and ex NY Gaucho's AAU and NY Rice HS coach and another coach from the inner workings of NY.....maybe Doh saw some of this from Lavin out there in the East and decided to beef his staff up to power from within?

Steve Lavin is doing an awesome job @ St. Johns. #2 recruiting class in the nation so far for 2011. A lot of people didn't like the hire & said it wouldn't work. There's no doubt in my mind that a BCG type couldn't come into SMU & produce the similar results.

so exactly why arent we going to do such a thing?

I'm concerned about PonyDoh's post on the prediction thread that says he thinks Doh will be back.

Does an 11-21 record really not push Doh out the door?

It's not going to work long-term for Lavin, cause like Doh, he's a freakin awful coach. Made some key assistant hires, and certainly reached out to the local NYC hoops community.

As for BCG, I just watched the Maryland football search up close, and saw first hand what a guy like Mike Leach or BCG does to a board of regents. When push comes to shove, some politico in academia is going to black ball BCG at SMU, I'd bet on it. Beyond that, some of you need to examine what he did at Kentucky, and pull off the blinders. In his entire tenure he offered a grand total of one kid that was a high major. That's not a matter of being over one's head, it's a matter of piss-poor evaluation. Basically, you guys are telling me to invest in another flame-out, who actually had a worse run at UK than Doh had at UNC? Only this time, let's make sure the flame-out is a wicked alcoholic, awesome.

He is tapped into the NYC pipeline, which will pay huge dividends in the future. I have hated seeing SJ struggle, and it is good to see them back a la the days of Chris Mullin.

We need a coach that can come in here and turn this program around using most of the 'talent' that we already have. We don't need another coach who has to start from ground zero again.

GO PONIES!!!

X's and O's are the reason I feel good about Doh staying on. I am not referring to Doh's coaching ability, but his assistant from Air Force and the Nuggets, Larry Mangino. I actually like the staff we have this year. Can't argue if SO thinks it's too little too late, but I think we are finally on the right path. As PonyDoh states, BCG flamed out worse at UK than Doh did at UNC. Doh had that great 1 year run at ND much like BCG at UTEP so you are trading one coach for another similar coach, with a bad drinking record. Maybe JJ has quelled my anxiety in basketball too, but I would stick it out at this point. I still feel cautiously optimistic that we can pull off 5-6 wins in conference play this season. The bottom of CUSA is terrible this year.

Are people aware A&M is pretty much better & cleaner, since he left? That they don't miss him at all, and never really did? That in his tenure at UTEP, he had 2 or 3 DUI/DWI's, that would flip out our admin? Oh yeah, he had another less than 2 years ago, and was pretty much legally forced into rehab. By all reports from UK, he spent more time hitting on undergrads at local watering holes, while running huge tabs, than he did worrying about the most storied program in NCAA history.

Are people aware Tim Miller endorses BCG as SMUs coach? lol
