Gray shirt/Red Shirt situation

Postby Mitch McConnell » Fri Dec 31, 2010 3:40 pm

Where do we stand with this?

I guess Kaiser is a redshirt?
Christian Miller is a gray shirt?

Stallion or anybody can you shed some light?

Kaiser will be a Redshirt Freshman next year

Good question on Christian Miller because it illustrates an extra advantage to greyshirting. You can do both. So he entered as a Greyshirt last Jan and he-I believe-Redshirted-this year. So he would be Freshman eligibilty wise next year-his 3rd year on campus. Of course, players have to produce because a Coach doesn't have to give them that redshirt year if they are riding the bench in their 4th year.

Sorry, I missed your answer.

Besides Kaiser and Miller, are you or anyone else aware of who is coming off the redshirt/greyshirt for 2011?

I'm interested because of the talent that has "stockpiled" if you will.

Thanks

Ben Hughes I think also
I will not make age an issue in this campaign. I'm not going to exploit for political purposes my opponent's youth and inexperience.

I believe these are all the scholarship players who redshirted:

(1)Hayden Greenbauer
(2)Der'rikk Thompson
(3)John Bordano
(4)Uchenna Nwabuike
(5)Ashton Duhe
(6)Stephen Kaiser
(7)Kyle Guinyard
(8) Mike Loftus
(9) Ben Hughes
(10) Christian Miller [added]

He will. Duhe needs to lose a lot of weight this summer to get to where the coaches want him to be

really? what's the story there? you don't often hear of players being overweight AFTER the season.

He's on track. He was in the 340s when he checked in last summer, and last I heard he's down into the 3-teens. Where do the coaches want him? 300? 290? Who knows how good a player he is, but he certainly seems to have a little discipline when it comes to putting in the time working out and presumably eating better.

Ashton Duhe is a different cat entirely from the one that showed up on campus in the fall.

Clearly he's a case of a kid who was big and strong enough to lean on an opponent in HS and be effective. My guess is that the coaches think he needs to shed a few because he runs after practices... a lot.

When you compare the Ashton Due who showed up here in the fall to another big guy -- Josh LeRibeus -- it's like night and day. LeRibeus looked like a ballet dancer in comparison. As an aside, I understand that LeRibeus is a phenomenal racquetball player who runs, leaps, twists and flies all over the court like a whirling dervish. He's a big guy, sure, but he's also a hell of an athlete.

Anyway, fast-forward from fall to now and Duhe should get major props for all the additional hard work he's put in. He's still running after practice, but now when he runs he's rumbling along at an impressive clip. And he's obviously shed quite a few pounds. So here's to you Ashton! The Pony Nation appreciates all the hard work you've put in and looks forward to many good seasons to come!

Mrydel, what about Jeremy Johnson? He only played a few snaps, can this year be counted at his red shirt?
