ten worst things to happen to SMU Football since DPThought I'd see how my list compares to everyone else's. Not looking to get bashed, just opinions.
1. End of SWC- killed recruiting 2. Injury and retirement of Shanderick Charles - a star on the rise 3. the breakup of the WAC - loss of BYU ect, meant lower quality conference 4. Transfer of Chris Sanders- Dallas HS star could have led to more Dallas area recruits, instead set records in TN 5. The retirement of David Page- he left the stable was bear 6. Loss of Darrel Dickey as Offensive Coordinator- This guy has unt winning? 7. Rise of TCU - Recruiting 8. Scheduling of Oklahoma State (killing us on the field and recruiting in Dallas) 9. Ramone Flannigan hurting his finger his freshman year- never threw the deep ball the same after that 10. Ramone Flannigan getting knocked out vs Ark the first game of the year

Good job- David. ... Now let's 'change the future'. It's time to re-create the SWC between now & 2010 ![]() Who's the new SWC: SMU TCU Baylor U of H Rice ... then add (see why) Tulane (great road trip to New Orleans) Tulsa (to better appreciate where you live) UNT (to shut 'em up!) UTEP (play them later in the year for trip to Taos!) or maybe (& why) Memphis (to watch good basketball) LaTech (your right-- bad idea!) Any suggestions before I name myself Commissioner??????????

Yes, why do you get to be commish?! ![]() ![]() ![]()
One might consider the hiring of Pye as university president in the list. HE did all he could to move and then remove football from SMU. Also playing at old Owenby stadium. An old, out of date stadium with a near high school team (immediately post GP) had to look like a Mickey Mouse organization to potential recruits. It could not have helped recruiting to play in Owenby. The shrinking Mustang band. Once a proud and loud organization with a unique field entry has been sadly relegated to a small less active band. And this is not a knock on the band or its members. The current band just doesn't have adequate numbers. And last, the silly recruiting restrictions. We got caught buying players. We didn’t get the DP for accepting academically challenged athletes.
Chris Sanders transferring belongs nowhere on the list. Not even the top 100.
Also, consider last year's 0-12 more than 15 years after the death penalty. SMU had a chance to hire former Minneasota assistant coach and now current Packers assistant coach Ray Sherman in 1997. #1) Copeland is still around and not gone
Ponyte of course I agree about Pye but you are absolutely correct about Ownby too. It was a touchy-feely decision not based on the best interests of SMUfootball-and there was no way that any coach could attract quality recruits to the worst facility in Division 1A. Perfect example of stupid decisions made by people who had no business participating in how to run a Division 1A program. We came back as a Mickey Mouse program where the opposing team had to dress in the BB arena across the street-and some of you wonder why the SWC fell apart.
The hiring of Mike Cavan should definately be on the list.
So far, the hiring of Phil Bennett would not be to far out of the top 10 as he is the only coach post DP to go winless in a season. However, I do have faith that he will get this program headed in the right direction
Yes, the Malin incident was another step backwards - although who knows if Moseley or Corlin Donaldson ever would have been able to stay in school.
It was also too bad that Karon Riley was chased off as well as he had a solid career at Minnesota. Is he still in the NFL?
Re:
That was very bad but I also think it could actually help us...Atleast it woke some people up about our football team. ![]()
Re:
You might be right, but what do you get when people finally wake up to 0-12? We have to average 15K in home attendance this year to remain eligible for D-1 football. We were on the bubble at best for that number last year when we were coming off a season with some wins. Last year's record was particularly bad not only in and of itself, but for the timing on this attendance issue. This is troublesome, friend.
I think after that Baylor game everyone knew it was going to be a bad year.
If you didnt go to that Baylor game then you wouldnt know how many people actually came. Ahhh that was fun besides the fact that they lost and plus my freakin tickets were lost so I had the great pleasure of sitting in that freakin sun for about an hour as they redid everything ![]() ![]()
