man...thanks A LOT expony18.

I remember sarcastic cheering and the band playing peruna midway through the 2nd quarter when we finally got a first down.

Yeah, the class chock full of three stars that amounted to absolutely nothing here. Coincidence, or terrible talent evaluation?

I attended SMU from 2002-2006 so the Phil Bennett era was my era. I saw him around campus a few times and he couldn't have been a nicer guy. That said, he was a dreadful head coach who didn't have the respect of his players. Good luck at Bible Aggy Coach Bennett.
Back off Warchild seriously.

Bennett's staff had one of the three best recruiting classes since the DP. They recruited remarkably well given what they were working with.

There is an assumption that lack of recruiting is what has killed us, and to a certain extent it is true as we never sustained good recruiting classes year over year. But Cavan and Bennett in particular were good recruiters.

That video makes me want to curl up with a bottle of Evan Williams and cry. Appalingly bad play, awful attendance, Pokes everywhere, shockingly ugly uniforms. Oh, and appalingly bad play. There is literally nothing in the video that doesn't make me cringe.

Best success to a decent man that is in SMU's rear view mirror...time to move on.

Maybe not, but you can't totally write him off. 4 players he recruited to SMU were playing in the NFL this year.

I could live a lot of lifetimes and not come up with a better way to describe it myself.

Sad thing is, that described every...single...game...that season and many more to boot

Again, he did well all in all. I think people make the assumption he's a bad recruiter based on on field results. Two things against that: 1) Culture matters and he lost this team with his hard-ass manner; and 2) SMU didn't exactly make it easy for him to get players in here.

So, was the awesome 16 *** class he landed that to say underperformed would be
grossly conservative, was that coincidence, awful talent evaluation, or something else.

well, most of them left one way or another...so I'd say that class was one that largely never was

Again, it takes several of those types of classes. And Bennett was a hard-ass who lost his players.

I'm well aware that it takes more than one decent class to build a strong program. That's not the point of my comment. My comment was that that was a very talented class on paper, and almost without exception none of them panned out, they all flamed out, were terrible, transferred, became accountants, joined a rock band, etc. But for such a solid class, they delivered so little on the field, if they ever saw the field, that it's almost shocking.
