We will not even consider him until the first Wednesday in February. We have more serious prospects to be considering. Right now we are spending our time on currently enrolled athletes considering the pros vs. SMU. First we need to rule on whether or not to accept Andrew Luck should he decide to transfer. We have already told Ryan Mallett that since he decided to go pro and more specifically since he had already used a red shirt year, that WDNWHA.

Let's tap the brakes a little here. The fact that he is making sure he is making the decision that is right for him does not mean he is going anywhere else. Yes, he is going to visit a couple of schools, but he knows SMU, has good relationships with many players and coaches, and his family likes the idea of him playing near home. He is, after all, still committed to SMU, and he's a good player, so shouldn't the WDNWHA committee table this motion until Signing Day?

Frankly, although I feel his behavior has certainly warranted a pullback on efforts of the coaching staff, I think the only thing SMU can reasonably do is look for alternative. When Bennett gets to Baylor, I feel he is likely to offer Yenga (as I think has been noted, Bennett successfully recruited Youri...he is not an unknown quantity to J Yenga and family). Baylor is where his buddies are going; strong likelihood SMU is strictly fallback school. Arizona will be 2nd choice.

I'm worried about two others, for different reasons.

So IMHO, the staff should engage their alternatives if they are still available and go hunt down any JUCO that remotely seems like he is looking at a Texas Div 1A school.

We were all ok with the class without him 2 weeks ago. We'll be ok if he quits on us again.

We don't need players that don't want to be here, period. If he fits that description then I hope he ends up somewhere else. If he wants to be at SMU and is willing to give it his all then he has my full support and all of this is forgotten.

This guy is a clown and he's completely disrespecting smu. Who does he think he is anyway? He's not a top prospect. Good? Yes. But not good enough to put up with this crap. Good riddance. Learn to be appreciative next time...

I think this bashing is ridiculous. He is about to decide which school to dedicate the next 4-5 years of his life to. It is a big decision and he should explore every opportunity that is presented to him in order to be 100% certain that he is choosing the right fit for him. Does this mean that we should just sit and wait? Of course not, and I am sure the coaching staff is planning appropriately. Many of us have jobs, careers etc that we are happy in, but that doesn't mean if another opportunity arises that we would just ignore it and not explore what it is about. As an SMU fan, I would love for every targeted prospect to only look at my school and want to play here, but I am realistic. In reality, every prospect should listen to every offer they receive before making a final decision. The only knock I have on him during this process is the fact that he gave us verbals before fully exploring his opportunities.

Yenga Re-commits

Postby SMU2007 » Sun Jan 09, 2011 7:27 am

I don't think anyone has a problem with exploring of all his options. Actually committing somewhere and then saying "oh...nevermind I actually want something else" is different. And he's now done that twice.

If you want to equate this to the business world- You wouldn't tell your employer you want a job then back out, then tell them you want the job again, then backed out again, would you?

If you read rivals he makes it pretty clear he isn't just making sure...he basically tells rivals that smu sucks...

At least Goneaway had the decency to de-commit from other teams after he dropped us, not de-commit from SMU multiple times like Yenga. I'm all for options, but this guy is making me mad, especially after what he said the other day.

If he does end up here (he won't), I could see him having his foot one step out the door if he has any competition for playing time.

Just based on what I have read on Rivals and such, doesn't seem like you can trust him. After De-Commit #1 - seems like he was really wanting to go to Baylor or OSU. We'll see if Bennett offers - he'll probably end up there I would assume.

Those quotes from him about re-committing are hard to read now.

not encourage him to decommit. yank it from him. now. then if he's sitting there w/ no offers on signing day, offer him a gray shirt. give the scholly to someone who WANTS to be at SMU.
