I recall a great blog post from the 'ol SMU Football Blog when June was hired. Immediately our one and only blogster picked up on the fact that in his first press conference, June expressed incredible confidence in his system, his staff, and his ability to get the job done. It was basically, I'm here, it will get done, the apocalypse itself won't stop me. I don't know how long it will take, but it will get done.
Contrast that with Bennett who, although it was his first job as head coach, didn't express nearly the amount of confidence in success before his first season. Bennett's first game as head man was such an (un)forgettable wash in every way that it almost made you realize immediately that this hire wasn't going to work out, Phil wouldn't be the man to lead us out of the desert. Then there was June's first game against Rice. We lost, by quite a few, but that first quarter was an absolute thing of beauty for long-suffering SMU fans. Here's our brand new coach, new system, new QB, first game, on the road, and he immediately puts up two passing TD's on the board and SMU jumps out to a nice lead. The good times would end, seeing as how we went 1-11, but for 15 minutes, it was awesome.
Apple to an orange, but fun to recall nonetheless.
