Re: OMG MORE BLACK FROM A "TRADITIONAL SCHOOLYep they all look like USC-and every fan in the Country would know USC was playing on TV with every one of those uniforms. SMU wearing black or Phil Bennett's mistake or or the SMU NY Jets look, Dave Smith's Ohio St look-nobody would know who the hell was playing.

Re: OMG MORE BLACK FROM A "TRADITIONAL SCHOOL
Does it matter? The tradition outdates the change from leather helmets. I doubt anyone would complain about an occasional black SMU jersey if SMU had been doing it on an occasional basis since 1921.

OMG MORE BLACK FROM A "TRADITIONAL SCHOOLThe point being made is that you can tell it's USC very quickly. A moved/removed stripe somewhere doesn't cause you to wonder who the hell you're watching.
No one knows what Texas wore 110 years ago, but if you see an annoying orange team play, you know you're watching UT play. If you didn't know SMU was in the bowl game, I don't think people would have known they were watching the Mustangs on December 30. Derail the Frogs!

well when they wore the green the first time it wasnt a tradition... WEST DIVISION CHAMPS 2010
OMG MORE BLACK FROM A "TRADITIONAL SCHOOL
Exactly! And yes, this may be our argument 90 years from now, but it just doesn't work right now. Derail the Frogs!

Re: OMG MORE BLACK FROM A "TRADITIONAL SCHOOLHey, you got one thing right!!
Re: OMG MORE BLACK FROM A "TRADITIONAL SCHOOL
LOL logic fail. Most college colors back then were not set in stone yet - college sports were still very new (heck, the Syracuse Orange were wearing pink until the late 1800s). Notre Dame needed a color that didn't clash with other dark colors so that their QBs could see who to throw to (most schools didn't have white jerseys back then). Green jerseys thus became a Notre Dame tradition by the time that things like uniform colors became recognized as tradition.
Re: OMG MORE BLACK FROM A
this is a ridiculous argument. yes maybe if you are flipping through channels and spend less than 1 second seeing smu in black jerseys you might not instantly recognize them. who cares? if you weren't going to spend the extra 3 seconds it would take to figure out who was playing, you probably weren't going to watch the game anyway...
Re: OMG MORE BLACK FROM A "TRADITIONAL SCHOOL
The origin of school colors can be traced back to the founding of the University. At the time of its founding in 1842, Notre Dame's original school colors were yellow and blue; yellow symbolized the light and blue the truth. However, sometime after the Dome and Statue of Mary atop the Main Building was gilded (1879), gold and blue became the official colors of the University. http://www.und.com/trads/nd-m-fb-goldandblue.html Logic fail? thats 42 years between gilding and green WEST DIVISION CHAMPS 2010
Re: OMG MORE BLACK FROM A "TRADITIONAL SCHOOLClearly a "tradition" that came out of nowhere other than a "psychological ploy". Green was never a true ND color when Rockne broke these unis out. OH THE HORROR!
from google search: On October 8, 1921 Rockne led Notre Dame against Iowa in Iowa City, wearing green jerseys for the very first time. However, he could not bring home a victory against a stingy Hawkeye club. The 10-7 loss was the season's only defeat for Notre Dame, coming against an Iowa team that would finish the year undefeated in their own right. In spite of this defeat, Rockne is known to have liked the decision because he believed it helped his passers find their receivers much more easily in his fledging new offense. It wasn’t until the year 1927 that Rockne began using the green uniforms as a psychological ploy, and he ended up breaking them out in the most dramatic of ways. During Notre Dame’s first ever match up against then undefeated and defending mational champion Navy in Baltimore, Rockne decided to start his second-string reserves. Within five minutes, the Irish second-string unit had surrendered a touchdown. After Navy’s spirits had been raised by the early score, Rockne had his powerful starting lineup rip off their blue jerseys and charged onto the field covered in shimmering green uniforms. Navy never scored another point as Notre Dame rolled to an impressive 19-6 victory. From this a new tradition was born.
Re: OMG MORE BLACK FROM A "TRADITIONAL SCHOOLAnd it's 42 years in which most schools in intercollegiate athletics were changing their colors. University of Pennsylvania wasn't even red and blue until 1910 and they are one of the oldest schools in the country.

Re: OMG MORE BLACK FROM A "TRADITIONAL SCHOOL
i dont know why im even responding to you at this point... but the school colors were blue and gold for 85 years (although only 42 years officially) before they ever broke out a green uniform. and you're questioning my logic? WEST DIVISION CHAMPS 2010
