Big Ten to test division names in 2011

ShareretweetEmailPrintPARK RIDGE, Ill. (AP)—Legends and Leaders, the names for the Big Ten’s two new divisions, are sticking around. At least through next football season.

With the addition of Nebraska as its 12th team, the Big Ten announced in December it would field two six-team divisions in football with the winners meeting in a league title game.

The names sparked an uproar from critics, who questioned the suitability and asked the league to reconsider.

Big Ten chief communications officer Diane Dietz said Friday that the league will do market research during the 2011 season to see how the names play out.

“We’ve always said we’ve heard the feedback. We’re listening. We want to test them and the only way to test them is to let them do what they were intended to do,” Dietz said.

Commissioner Jim Delany said in an earlier radio interview that the names Legends and Leaders were picked to highlight the conference’s rich history and acknowledged he was surprised by the negative feedback

He said the league needed a period to breathe a little and not rush to judge whether the division names were sustainable.

Nebraska will be joined in the Legends Division by Northwestern, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota and Iowa. The Leaders Division will include Illinois, Indiana, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue and Wisconsin.

Well considering the other division name options were "Slower than the SEC" and "Less Physical than the Big 12", they are probably ok with those names.

The correct thing to do is rethink the divisions

West
Nebraska
Iowa
Minnesota
Illinois
Northwestern
Michigan

East
Indiana
Purdue
Michigan State
Michigan
Penn State
Ohio State

Or:

North
Minnesota
Wisconsin
Michigan
Iowa
Michigan State
Northwestern

South
Nebraska
Illinois
Purdue
Indiana
Ohio State
Penn State

Crossovers:
Nebraska-Iowa
Illinois-Northwestern
Purdue-Michigan State
Ohio State-Michigan
Indiana-Minnesota
Penn State-Wisconsin

Some of the Choices:

Plains/Black/Bo/Stars/Adidas/Legends

Michigan
Nebraska
Iowa
Michigan State
Northwestern
Minnesota

Lakes/Blue/Woody/Stripes/Nike/Leaders

Ohio State
Penn State
Wisconsin
Illinois
Purdue
Indiana

I can't wait until Michigan the "The leaders and best!" are the Leaders of the Legends!

Envy doesn't become us! We could only wish to be in a Conference like the Big Ten. And, yes, the SEC, is better.

Lego-lover builds replica of Ohio State stadium

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- A Columbus-area man has created a Lego replica of Ohio State's horseshoe-shaped football stadium, complete with a decorated archway and scoreboard made of the small blocks.

Paul Janssen used about a million Lego pieces to build the 8-foot-by-6-foot model, which has room for 6,000 Lego people.

The 42-year-old Ohio State researcher tells The Columbus Dispatch it was a challenge to create the rounded model out of the mostly rectangular blocks that fill his basement in stacked containers.

It took about 1,000 hours over two years. He studied the stadium, bought or traded for pieces and improvised, such as making pipes for the restrooms out of chrome parts from a Lego truck.

Now he's talking about adding a BCS or Heisman trophy to the display.

I'm not envious of the ridiculous naming convention they've used.

There a market to trade legos?
