Reporting 101: Never burn your source, or your information channel dries up. If someone tells you something in confidence, I think that should be respected.
Fact 1: Chris' scholarship offer was pulled by SMU. He did not, as was being widely speculated on this site, renege on his commitment (although he was obviously waffling).
Fact 2: Chris was shocked when his offer was pulled. From his reaction at the time, he hadn't the least clue that his decision to look around some more would draw the kind of ire that it did.
Mike, what I'm getting flamed over is my assertion (and the use of the word "FACT" in all caps 15 posts ago in this thread) that Chris was visibly and obviously shocked when his scholarship was pulled.

The only reason any of this matters, is that if our coaches really pulled the offer before he decommits, they are certifiably nuts. Since I prefer not to think that they are that crazy, I prefer to think that PPunch's "sources" are either mistaken or they are spinning this in a positive light for Chris's benefit. Lets hope it becomes a moot point because I am sure after we win 2 of our first three he will re-up as a pony.

some of you people that are sniffing the coaching staff's skirts for information ever hear of the word SPIN. Kinda like when Phil Bennett said he wouldn't recruit JUCOs to SMU and gets 6 two years later. Kinda like when Phil Bennett tells you that we are on an even playing field while all the time I gurantee he is doing everything he can to make changes. The inability of the cheerleaders to see through the official party propoganda line is always entertaining.

Brian Gates at Rivals said SMU pulled the offer (according to Chris). He wrote:
"One day a Pony, another day a Cowboy. That’s the story for Irving, Texas, offensive tackle Chris Hall. The 6-foot-5, 285-pound Texas top-100 talent was committed to SMU for early in the recruiting process, but started looking around and the Mustangs pulled his scholarship offer. That opening led him to look at other schools and he found the perfect fit on Wednesday."
He confirmed this in an email.

Anyone else think this is getting carried away? Who said what to whom is irrelevant at this point. Let's focus on guys like the Southlake OL who ARE coming to SMU, and those who we can add to his class.
Once a Mustang, ALWAYS a Mustang!

to be accurate-since the July 29th Rivals report was quoted above-it should be pointed out that at least one week earlier, Rivals in two separate reports quoted Hall saying "I recently de-committed from SMU" "I just didn't think feel that is the place for me" "He is not sold to SMU and wants to look around" "I changed my mind-I'm still looking around and I've informed SMU that I'm still looking around" Looks to me that someone at SMU got mad because a 17 year old wasn't sure what to do with his life. I have no problem with a coach telling a recruit when signing date is approaching that he can not assure his scholarship if the class is filling up and the staff is concerned about filling the spot with a quality replacement, but it borders on petty and selfish to jerk an offer when you have ZERO other commitments 7 months before signing date, you plan to offer a large class at that position and the recruit in question is at the top of your recruiting list. I think a school would be better served by avoiding those kinds of threats if they were made. Its also pretty damn hypocritical for any coach at any school to demand that type of loyalty when none of those coaches seem to mind pursuing and stealing another school's commitments. In this particular instance 7 months away from signing date it is ridiculous. I know for a fact that Mack Brown at UT does the same thing but you know what UT didn't just go 0-12 and has 65% of the Texas Top 100 looking at them.

How many offers does SMU currently have out? While there is only one/few commitments, there are a lot of offers out. That may be affecting the decision to hold that offer open.

Gotta believe there is plenty of room for a guy of Chris' caliber. When I 1st heard this news, I just assumed this was another emotional reaction by Bennett. Anyone remember the press conference after TCU bailed out on CUSA? I think Bennett's immediate reaction was "fine, I don't care if we ever play them again" or something to that effect. He's shown that he is an emotional guy who will sometimes speak before thinking things through. In this case, even if Chris had second thoughts and really wanted to stay in Dallas at SMU, it just may be too late because of stubborn feelings and emotions on both sides. We're a long ways from February so who knows what might happen.

CP - yes there is a lot of time and many outstanding offers will expire as kids make decisions. There will certainly be time renew a offer to Chris if that becomes something Chris is interested in. If he is not interested then it does not matter anyway.
