Memphis making a run up the totem pole of CUSA recruiting with 4 3 stars over the weekend. I think Marshall had a pretty big weekend too-I thought I saw a former Michigan QB signee and high 3 star LB-may have been rated a 4 star by ESPN as I recall from memory

I'm no recruiting expert, but it seems to me that a major sign of a program's arrival is when it starts landing 4 or 5 star defensive tackles. It's my understanding that truly athletic D-tackles are among the rarest of recruits and usually get snapped up by the likes of UT, Alabama, Florida, etc. (and I suppose Auburn). Good for the Toads.

Very Impressed with our coaching staffs ability to recruit. Well done. Tcu won't be enjoying things much longer

I like it that we edge past KU and MU - slowly but surely!

Not to beat a dead horse, but If I were June Jones, I'd be calling Herschel Sims. The young man seems to regret every committing to Okie State. He'd go to TCU now, but they don't seem to be interested anymore. My concern is that Ronnell & Herschel will both end up at Baylor.

My understanding is that Curtis Carter did not enroll at TCU yet.Stallion wrote:TCU just got another 4 star-DT Chuck Hunter from Louisiana. Plus they had a 4 star from 2009 enroll at midterm

No, he failed the ACT twice, but passed on his third try. He'll qualify.Mitch McConnell wrote:Grade issue with him is what I understandStallion wrote:TCU just got another 4 star-DT Chuck Hunter from Louisiana. Plus they had a 4 star from 2009 enroll at midterm

You can't really "fail" the SAT or ACT-you just might not get a good enough score to qualify on the sliding scale. You can be among the bottom 4-6% of all test takers in the country and still "pass" the SAT/ACT for NCAA purposes. There really is no legitimate floor SAT/ACT anymore as long as you don't fall asleep during the test-its been completely deemphasized

That is amazing. Why even make them take it?Stallion wrote:You can be among the bottom 4-6% of all test takers in the country and still "pass" the SAT/ACT for NCAA purposes.

de-emphasized since it didnt help college football recruit the bottom 5% - which they are now able to do.

lost 114 points with Carter Wall decommitment out of 618 former total points. I'm still not sure I buy how Rivals calculates these classes with their Total Points scheme. Hanging on to Top 50 at No. 49

Actually, Carter Wall is not the reason we dropped. Even after losing him our top 20 recruits consist of 1 4-star and 19 3-stars, so our top 20 recruit breakdown didn't change. Additionally, Rivals lists him as the 80th offensive tackle in the nation, and they only give bonus points for the top 40 offensive tackles. I checked our points earlier and we still had 618 even without Wall.Stallion wrote:lost 114 points with Carter Wall decommitment out of 618 former total points. However, when I saw your post I went back to check and saw the 114 point drop to 504. I believe the reason for the drop is that Rivals has dropped KC Nlemchi down to the 36th ranked RB in the nation and Rivals only gives bonus points for the top 35 RB in the nation. I am not sure where they had Nlemchi ranked previously, but I know he was in the top 35 because I had attributed bonus points to him when I built my spreadsheet 2-3 weeks ago. When I tried to click on the RB ranking list it would not load and said they were updating the rankings, so this all seems to hang together.
Adjusting my calculation to remove bonus points from Nlemchi puts SMU at 504 points, matching Rivals.
For anyone interested, I built my spreadsheet using the information at the link below, which was posted here before. The bonus points I refer to above is just shorthand for the "N" calculation they have.
SMU gets bonus points as follows (bonus points are not just added, much bigger/more complicated impact than that. See link for explanation if you are interested):
8 for Moreland - 18th ranked strongside DE, Rivals gives 8 point bonus for stongside DE's ranked 6-30 nationally
8 for Levingston - 22nd ranked offensive tackle, Rivals gives 8 point bonusfor offensive tackles ranked 6-40 nationally

Re: We are #2 Ranked Non-BCS Team in Recruiting
I'm glad someone knows how the hell they calculate it because I've been following it since they first implemented it and it makes very little sense to me. Why would the 35th best RB and the 36th best RB logically make such a huge difference in the potential of two separate classes. ANSWER: It doesn't mean a damn thing. I'm still satisfied with just getting a sense of the strength of a Class by just weighing the number of highly recruited players and trying to adjust for those that may have committed early before getting a bunch of offers. It generally becomes pretty apparent when you take a look at the offers-Coaches are the best evaluators of College Talent not recruiting services. Rivals should just trash the entire system for some calculation that makes some reasonable sense. Hell if they would just average their secondary ratings you'd probably getter a better sense for the relative strength of the classes

I agree with you that it makes no sense that a change in ranking from 35-36 would make such a big impact. I just wanted to understand the ranking because everyone is always talking about Rivals rankings so I thought it would be nice to see what the drivers were.Stallion wrote:I'm glad someone knows how the hell they calculate it because I've been following it since they first implemented it and it makes very little sense to me. Even crazier is that impact is felt for every player in the ranking. Every player has a high and low point value based on their stars, and those high and low point values are weighted based on the bonus points. More bonus points means a higher weight for the high point value and lower weight for the low point value. Why the heck should SMU signing Levingson impact how many points SMU gets from Longoria, Sams and Lasecki? Silly.
And that is even before you consider that even just the 1 rank change in their national ranking could make a huge difference as well.
