Re: Question: what will be the likely starting 5 next yearI'm tired of the contract situation of Doherty. But I've resolved myself to the fact that he will return for 2011-12 season.
Maybe the thinking is, "He must be given the opportunity to work with all of these highly regarded players for one season. And if he falls on his face with that roster, then a move must be made.'' But who knows.
Re: Question: what will be the likely starting 5 next year
I would think that's it. Also, they didn't hire a search firm for assistants to can them the very next season. Mangino & Hobbie are proving to be quite good, FWIW. I tend to think his 5 year deal bumped to 7, and it just destroyed any hope of a buy-out, especially w/June needing an extension. Lastly, Doh has the hoop wallets in his pocket, and they are going to give him an opportunity w/a real roster. Truthfully, after watching the team play so far this year, I'm far less gung-ho about firing the guy. That could change if we mail in the rest of the season, but this is his best coached team by far. They still suck, but its amazing they aren't getting run out of gyms every single night “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
Re: Question: what will be the likely starting 5 next yearYou have to think he's giving more authority to the assistants now than before.
Re: Question: what will be the likely starting 5 next yearSo what do they do. Give him an extension at the end of the year (so he can recruit) but have unreleased contingencies that must be met or it is nullified and he is gone? I cannot imagine keeping him without an extension of some type.

Re: Question: what will be the likely starting 5 next year
If he has 2 left after this year(7 yr deal), they don't have to extend him right away. When/If they do, it's an extension in name only. No bump in pay, limited to no buy out etc “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
Re: Question: what will be the likely starting 5 next yearWe'll have to live with it I guess. Can't believe he has already been here for 5 - anywhere else but SMU he would have been gone.
Re: Question: what will be the likely starting 5 next yearI thought next year was the last. Thanks.

not many places were in SMUs situation 5 years ago. Its been quite the rehab “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. Re: Question: what will be the likely starting 5 next year
I'm not positive myself. Originally it was 5 though. I thought the incentives bumped it to 7 but could be wrong “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. Re: Question: what will be the likely starting 5 next yearI thought next year is it also...he doesnt have 7 ...
Re: Question: what will be the likely starting 5 next yearWhat's the name of the Nevada transfer? I hear good things about him, especially his character, but forgot his name.
Re: Question: what will be the likely starting 5 next year
'Cotton' Giles from Kimball HS....don't know of his character but he must have something, because he has helped open doors to the 'barber shops' of South Dallas. He was a highly ranked PG ( 14th in the State of Texas) out of HS. As below from SMUmustangs.com: Giles, a 6-3 guard, was District 14-4A Offensive MVP and a Dallas Morning News all-area second-team selection as a senior at Kimball High School in 2007-08. He also served as team captain at Kimball. At Nevada, he was a backup point guard behind 2010 NBA second-round selection Armon Johnson. As a sophomore, Giles saw action in 28 games for a team that made the second round of the NIT. "Cotton was a player we wanted at SMU out of Kimball HS where he played for Snoop Johnson. He is a terrific guard with great size and athleticism. I am excited about all the things he will bring to our program - scoring , defense and leadership. I believe Cotton can be a big time guard in CUSA. In addition, Cotton's reputation in the Dallas area will help us in recruiting area players in the future."
Re: Question: what will be the likely starting 5 next yearhere is the article where 5-year vs 7-year discussions began:
http://collegesportsblog.dallasnews.com ... -year.html it states, in part: He signed a five-year deal when he was hired before the 2006-07 season, but he earned one-year extensions after each of his first two seasons. That means he's under contract until the end of the 2012-2013 season. Assuming it's accurate, that means he has two years after this season.
Re: Question: what will be the likely starting 5 next yearMost of us are a little surprised Doherty is still the coach due to the lack of success during his coaching tenure. Most schools would have already let Doherty go by now, but, then again, SMU is not like most schools. Unless Orsini has a big splash hire in mind (that would probably mean paying 1M or more a year) then Doherty may be the best option for next year. I am real excited about the players coming into the program and expect the team to be a tough opponent for anyone they play next year. I forgot about the Kimball / Nevada transfer, Giles. It will be a big plus to have a point guard with Division 1 experience step into the program. The Duncanville / Texas transfer is the player I am most excited to see. Let's hope we have recently reached bottom in this program and are now taking positive steps towards building a nationally competitive team that will draw more interest from the local high school and Juco talent pool.
Re: Question: what will be the likely starting 5 next yearI'm sure Doherty will be extended again because there is no way we don't make the NCAA Tournament next season with our players.
