Practice # 29, are you kidding?

Postby LATech » Fri Aug 27, 2004 8:18 pm

Texas Tech sees SMU as it's practice #29? You've gotta be kidding. What incredible bulletin board material!

Get 'em SMU!

And who said this? I haven't seen that quote from anybody in Lubbock.

It is in Calvin Watkins' section of SMU College Briefs in today's Dallas Morning News SportsDay.

That is something Miami might say, not Texas Tech.

(Nice screen name, Pony Fan!)

I agree, this is a very un-Tech-like comment. I know players at every school are anxious to get the season underway, and maybe this was an over-zealous player with a little too much pent-up energy, or a player who won't get much playing time, or a player who didn't realize he was talking to someone who might quote him. Whatever the circumstances, I bet whoever it was had a none-too-pleasant sit-down with Coach Leach.

And, in the grand scheme of things, the echo of this comment will linger all of a couple of plays. Once the game starts, the purity of football takes over. Let the games begin!

Not hard to see how somebody at Tech might be saying this"

1) SMU hasn't beaten Tech since 1986 - only 1 or 2 games against them have even been "close"

2) SMU has lost its last three openers by 109 points.

3) SMU does have the second longest losing streak in the country at 12 games.

Hopefully, our new offense can get clicking early and they are looking past us - nobody wants to start the season like Bennett did the last time his team opened the season at home.

Thanks, PonySnob, as always we can count on you for uplifting messages in support of our Mustangs, especially a team which hasn't played a game yet.

You are nothing, if not consistent.

Optimism

Postby Arkpony » Sat Aug 28, 2004 1:48 pm

There are a few posters on this site (I think we all know who they be) that have an attitude of "Oh Hell! We just scored! Now we have made the other team mad!" . They wil always preach doom and gloom because that is the way they view life. They call it being "realistic". And to some extent they are correct. However, there is also the other side (which I prefer to stand on) that maintains that "believing" can achieve success. The doom and gloom guys look down upon us as idiots. But if we, as loyal SMU fans, don't believe and hope, we are always doomed to failure. Pie-in-the-sky? Idiots? Unrealistic? Perhaps, but I bet my last dollar that I get a lot more excited about the Mustangs and have a lot more fun than the other guys.

well said, ArkPony. This time of year, we are undefeated and many have hope that SMU will be this year's surprise team. Not many pundits expect much of anything from this team, but hopefully our guys believe this is the year they turn things around.

If anyone from Tech really said this, it was a stupid thing to say.

Dubious

Postby Mr. Football » Mon Aug 30, 2004 10:56 am

I kind of doubt that any coaches or players from Tech said this. I think this is manufactured bulletin board material.

Are you talking about practice man? I mean, this is not even the actual game here. We're talking about practice. Practice, man. Not the real game. Practice.

Practice 29

Turns out it was a SMU WR trying to stir up the Ponies. It may have the opposite affect since it got back to Tech players & coaches. Tech doesn't take anyone lightly. One thing I like about Mike Leach. We melted down on occassions, but we don't take anyone lightly. Ask Baylor or review last year's Tech v SMU game.

In the highly unlikely event that you are confusing me with one of the "doom and gloom guys" I will just say I have never called anyone an idiot (I don't think, and if I did I'll retract it here and now), nor do I look down on anyone. You can call the unrealistic side "believers" if you want--I wish you well. But the realist in me would like to know how many of the past 15 years you've been believing and what achievement of success you claim from it. The fact that you feel good about your status as a fan of SMU football has to be its own reward, because the simple fact is the other guy's three points are correct and SMU has fallen woefully short of achieving success on-field. I want the same turnaround everyone does, I just won't lie to myself after all this time that it appears on the verge of happening. For the future, I hope I'm wrong and you believers are right.
