June's Boldest Statement to Date

Postby Dooby » Thu Feb 03, 2011 5:45 pm

“With adding these kids, and when we add another class next year, I’ll be disappointed if we don’t make a run like we did in Hawaii or like TCU has done. We’ve built a really good foundation, and we’re in pretty good shape to do some neat things.” — June Jones

At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

He has been there and he has seen what it takes. Glad he is doing it as SMU and not some other school.

The kids from the past two recruiting classes are far more talented coming out of HS than any he had at Hawaii and he led them to the freakin' Sugar Bowl. This is why we pay him 2.5M a year. I'll trust a guy who has been there and done it. SMU will be the next BCS buster if we keep progressing on this path.

Good to hear from June. Let's be the new Boise/TCU underdog team. Exciting times ahead!!

I'll be happy when the offense can actually look efficient for a long stretch of many games.

I like that he has a vision and wants to see it through (hopefully). He has talked a big game with playing at Cowboys Stadium in the future, etc.

June is full of vague, vanilla coach-speak, and has a laundry list of June-isms that make you kind of scratch your head...see his thoughts on what it costs to go to school here. That, however, is a quote you keep in mind moving forward.

They are tapped into TX and CA. They have the resources of SMU. They play in a conference where a schedule could be run. No reason not to think that this will happen. It ought to be the stated goal in padron's Senior year.

I need to make one thing clear here. Hawaii's poor schedule had more to do with making the Sugar bowl then anything JJ did. For the talent Hawaii had that year, we should have won every game by 30 points or more. As a matter of fact, JJ almost blew a couple games that should have been blow out wins.

Louisiana Tech (Took an INT at the end in the end-zone to seal the deal)
45-44

San Jose St. (Took a fumble recovery at the end and last minute drive for the game winning TD)
42-35

Fresno St.
37-30

Nevada (Game winning FG with seconds left to win it)
28-26

Washington (Another game saving INT in the end zone to end the game)
35-28

These close game were against very poor teams. Don't get me wrong, I totally enjoyed that season. But, being a realist, we were lucky not to have any good teams on that 2007 schedule. The 2006 team had better talent then the unbeaten 2007 team but they lost 3 games playing a decent schedule.

So I guess what I'm saying is, better talent doesn't always equal to more wins with JJ. I'm really curious to find out how your OOC schedule is looking since JJ's arival.

we are going to have a much more talented team than the 2006 hawaii sugar bowl team - no doubt about it. JJ has everything to do with building that talent base (and klemm of course). please don't try to take anything away from the guy.

I don't see us running the table or making a BCS game before Jones contract is up, we are set to play some tough OOC schedules with TCU and a few Big 12 teams to deal with every season not to mention C-USA is getting better all the time.

Good things are on the horizon. But, yes I doubt we are a true "BCS" buster unless June sticks around or Jeff Reinbold takes over the helm and continues the winning attitude past 2014. Maybe 2015/16 would be realistic if we continue to get good classes.

We have a legite enough OOC schedule (big 12 and TCU), are in a major sports market, that if we run the table we will will play in a BCS game. Conference USA is not a bad conference but it is certainly capable of producing an undefeated team. Honestly I'm expecting 9+ wins next year comming of a season like that we should have enough momentum (ie willcrack the top 25 early enough) to make a BCS run if we go undefeated
