Conference USA is not a bad conference but it is certainly capable of producing an undefeated team. Honestly I'm expecting 9+ wins next year comming of a season like that we should have enough momentum (ie willcrack the top 25 early enough) to make a BCS run if we go undefeated
We have a hell of a schedule next year. TCU, A&M, Tulsa, UCF, and Houston. 9 wins would be miraculous.

not to mention Southern Miss and Tulsa. I think we'll definitely have a better team that might be challenged to finish 7-5 in the regular season. This freshman class may make a small contribution but this class will really start to blossom later. "Recruit well for at least 3 years and then count to 3-4 after the first strong class-". Its pretty similiar to what June Jones says when he talks about needing 1 1/2 more recruiting classes (or is it 1/2 after yesterday) as he enters preparation for his 4th season.

Klemm's never been a head coach at any level. He's only a few years removed from playing. Reinbold has been a coach at many levels, been there, done that. What Klemm has done so far has been great, especially on the trail, but it's premature to anoint him - or anyone - successor.
In the end, June's greatest contributions to the program might not be strictly in wins and losses, but in making sure the administration and athletic department are committed to competing on the same terms as other schools, and showing the world that SMU isn't some career-killing, coaching graveyard.
Hiring a competent AD after Orsini leaves will be far easier than it was attracting one before he was here. Hiring a solid football coach after June leaves will be far, far easier than it's been in the last 25 years.

Give Klemm a few more years of experience and he'll be ready to take the helm if he is still at SMU.

I would hope that a national search would be conducted for Jones' successor, by the end of 2014 Klemm would have 6 years of college coaching experience under his belt (presumably all as an OL coach).

Woah... Easy. Like TCU? Not just Yet. Not quite. Things are going in the right direction, but let's not get way ahead of ourselves. Can we beat Navy, and dominate a few CUSA teams first? Then we can move on to competing with TCU, A&M, and Tech.

We were competitive with TCU and Tech last year.

Next year will be a real test for us. Padron will be a junior and though we lose AR, but return a bunch of players. We will be deeper and less likely to be gassed in the 4th quarter. Our defense should continue to be more than an after-thought. If the offense gets untracked next year, it could be a banner year. I would like nothing better than to serve a big stinking doo doo sandwich to the Aggies and the Frogs.

Hockeyguy is, IMO, right on target. I said after JJ was hired that he could get us a lot better but not where we need to be which is where TCU is today. The reason that JJ will never be able to have as much consistent success against good teams as Patterson has had is because JJ is not as sound as Patterson is. A good example of what a JJ coached team is capable of is the stinker against ARMY. No way that SMU should have lost that game. A team which throws the ball as much as JJ does is just not going to be as mentally tough as a team which has a more balanced offense. In JJ's offense if the QB and his receivers are not hitting on all cylinders, we have nothing to hang our hat on. Of course, JJ could change his philosophy and become more run oriented but I doubt that will happen. Long term, with the right coach, SMU should be consistently better than TCU. Meanwhile, I am happy that JJ and his staff are getting better athletes at SMU and making the interior structural changes that need to be made to make SMU a power again.

If our D continues to be one of the top 3 in the conference, and JJ can actually execute with the offense, anything is possible.
I'm looking to witness two things before I'm convinced this thing has turned the corner headed towards BCS buster.
- I wan't a marquee win over a ranked AQ team (that includes TCU now). This year that means TCU and/or A&M. While it would be great to beat a ranked CUSA team (if we play one), that alone would not satisfy this want.
- Second, I want to beat the [deleted] of teams that are clearly not as good as us. Of our wins in 2010, I would only consider one to be a blow out win UAB (28-7), and we should have put 50. There were a few games against awful teams (Rice and Tulane) that we looked bad and could have easily lost. We need to leave no doubt against inferior teams, beat teams as good or slightly better than us and steal one or two from ranked teams. When we start to do this consistently, we can start talking about running the table.

I agree most likely in the long run you can't compete with the big boys when it comes to the offense. Has a real run 'n shoot been succesful ever on a very high level? NFL? I don't know...? June obviously relied heavily on Zach Line this year and has had 2 1000 yard rushers for the first time in his college coaching. I would say that is different philosphy than years past -- in many games this year, the passing game was pretty bad and we had to run Zach a lot. We'll be 7-5 next year if we are lucky. Just too many tough games for us. The question is - will Padron click on the light or not? If we resemble anything like the Army game, uh oh. SMU definitely was the better team.
