Re: June's Boldest Statement to DateIf one watched TCU much in the last few years it is obvious that it helps the running game( and passing game) a lot if there are some designed runs for the QB. Boise State runs the ball a lot also but also has two running backs in the backfield sometimes. Teams that run the ball can then throw play action passes and that includes most NFL teams. JJ does not throw play action passes much(if any) but rather we have play action runs which rely on the defense expecting a pass. With only one running back in the backfield and throwing as much as we do the base run is a draw. No lead blocker and no threat of the QB as a runner. Pretty limited running attack. We probably have some pretty good running backs on the squad but in the present offense only one is going to play and that is Line whose primary job is to pass block.
Re: June's Boldest Statement to DateI don't agree with it either but 1500 yards rushing isn't too shabby. McNeal threw off a lot of defenses with his quickness. He ran McNeal off screens more than he does with Line, if hardly ever. He ran ZAch about 30x one game - so he knows that sometimes he needs to change. As we have discussed before on PF, I don't think we are anywhere near a true RNS.
I would much prefer different set looks to throw off the defense, play action, and lead blockers. I really like Todd Graham's multiple sets on offense. Zach is only a JR next year. Does Niemichi even see the field until he's a Jr? Do you redshirt him? Why is June so stubborn to only play one back during a game? If he had 2 RB's that could pass block would he play them? June's Boldest Statement to DateKC redshirts. If Pope or Fields prove they can pass block, one gets a big bump in PT this year.

June's Boldest Statement to DateJj had said many times that 2012 is a season to watch out for...
Re: June's Boldest Statement to Date
almost.
Re: June's Boldest Statement to DateJJ is not stuck with his offense. He has evolved and made changes. Vs. UCF he tried to run the QB. I think we will see more of that. He even threw in a trick play!!
Regarding the Army game, it was the turnovers, especially the one for a TD (plus the missed FGs) SMU out stated Army by a mile and were in position to win the game after being down 16-0 at the half. I do not really want to hear about how the Army game exemplified anything. Go Ponies!!
Beat whoever it is we are playing!! @PonyGrad
Re: June's Boldest Statement to Date
Should have the depth he wants by then but will have to replace the entire o-line, gotta play 3 AQ teams OOC (though 2 are at home). They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security

Re: June's Boldest Statement to Date
We lost the army game not because we are running Jones' offense, but because we AREN'T running Jones' offense. Look at Hawaii's history. The post by Warbow earlier highlighted some games that should have been blowouts but weren't. What do they all have in common? High scoring games. In Hawaii they had no defense whatsoever. If we can get the offense running anything like what they had in Hawaii, even with the defense we had last year we could crush CUSA. "I think Couchem is right."

Re: June's Boldest Statement to DateAnyone who has listened to college coaches speak on signing day knows that all are optimistic and basically say "this is the best recruiting class we have signed", or "this "QB would be a number 1 pick in the NFL draft" if he was a senior, or this "guy reminds me of Earl Campbell" or "this Katy qb is the most accurate passer I have ever seen"! Then the recruits show up for summer workouts and reality hits them in the face. They find those "promised starting positions" means that if you are the best player you will start. That is why so many coaches would make great car salesmen. Anything less than 9 wins, barring injuries, is a step back for SMU. That is a compliment to the job JJ has done. Look at UT, one bad year after all those 10 and 11 win seasons and all of a sudden the "mantra" of we are "family" goes out the door along with six long-time assistants!
Re: June's Boldest Statement to Date
Coach speak aside, this is objectively the best class since you know when. ![]() Go Ponies!!

Re: June's Boldest Statement to Date
Listin we have what 19 returning starters? 10 on offense, we are going to be a much better team next year. One area where I think this will really be obvious is consistency. Young guys make mistakes ie turnovers and penelties, how many drives were killed because of one of these. Remember we already outgained almost every opponet we played last year. I don't care about our schedule,it is tougher but we will be better so I'm still expecting more W's. Lets look at the schedule, A&M: they are good but aggies always lose games they should win. It is in their nature. They will begoingintoour game withdreamsofwinningthe Big12 and will overlook SMU thinking we are a patsy, We could easily win this game. TCU: they are basically doingthe opposite of us and have to replace 18 starters, I know they have talent and are well coached but when the crunch time comes experience iswhat i want in my pocket, remember our young mistakeprone team was beatingthem 1/2 through the 3rdQ, we can win this game. Northeastern: nothing to say except glad we schedule done team we should clearly outmatch NAVY: We should have beat this teamthis year but we got tired and made a stupidplay at the end of the gmae to lose. Navy will take a big step back losing their QB and we have more depth on D this game should not be a problem, plus it is at home. I won't go though the whole conference schedule butletme hit someof the highlights. Tulsa: they lost their HC and OC they will take at least step back if not a big one. Pluse we just have this teams number i'm not worried about it. Southern Miss: they play no defense so I'm confident we can out gun them with the talent we return on both sides of the ball. UCF: willbe a tough game but we don't know where it will be (even though for somereason I feel like it will be in D), we shyould have beat them in their place but again turnovers killed us with us improved and hope fully not making as meany we beat them too. The Scheduleis tougher but we should still expect alot based on what we are bringing to the table. I feel under JJwe finally have the talent and attitude where we need to worry about our house to determine what we will do in a year, and our house looks good
Re: June's Boldest Statement to DateNorthwestern State is one of the OOC opponents, not Northeastern.
