Klemm named one of the top 25 recruiters in the country

Postby SMU 86 » Mon Feb 07, 2011 3:29 pm

He was the only non BCS coach to make the Rivals list. Outstanding accomplishment IMO.

Great for Klemm, bad for us. He'll get snatched up soon. Hopefully he'll stick around for another year.

this is great news...way to go Coach Klemm!
no surprise...this quickly gets twisted into some possible negative for SMU
but for all the recruits and parents that read PonyFans
dont worry about the talk predicting Coach Klemm might leave SMU
Coach Klemm may in fact be the wealthiest member of the SMU coaching staff including June
so I doubt Coach Klemm would need the money like many asst coaches
Plus Coach Klemm could be the next SMU head coach if he keeps up the great work.
is there a chance he could leave?...well sure....but thats any coach at any school
the point being it's not a forgone conclusion Coach Klemm is going to leave SMU
he really is close with Coach Jones and this staff.

June found him, didn't he. If he leaves, he'll go find another. Quality candidates will be readily available as SMU will be seen as a program where they can succeed personally and go make more money somewhere else. Sunrise, sunset.

Very true. June is a master at building a great staff that are all on the same page.

I love the job Mason has done with our defense, but it would be cool if there was some position for Jerry Glanville to fill. Even if it's just some consultant or grad assistant role, he would be awesome on the sidelines. He'd be in all black, but at least he'd have the cowboy boots.

Side note we could at least explain away two of our 18 thousand empty seats saying they're reserved for Elvis + one.

He might find another but I wouldn't just take Coach Klemm for granted.

It's not about taking something, or someone, for granted. If a coach of ours is hired away that's a good thing, unless it's simply because the school refused to offer a salay raise comparable to the other offer. For 25 years did SMU ever have a coach hired away for any sport? That is a tangible sign of progress. Other schools want to hire away SMU(!)'s coaches.

June's greatest gifts to SMU so far haven't in simple W's and L's. They've been to show the world that this isn't the career-killing, coaching graveyard that it was for Rossley, Cavan, Bennett, which is admittedly a byproduct of getting a certain number of wins; and to help enact administrative changes to allow SMU to compete fairly with other universities on the field.

If we lose an assistant coach, a head coach, or even an AD, moving forward it will be easier to attract quality candidates to fill the position. After June, we won't have to throw over 2 million dollars at someone to simply attract a very high quality football coach who only specializes in reclamation projects like SMU's.

I disagree that coaching at SMU is a grave yard. Going back to 95, Tanuta left SMU and became the DC for Ohio State. Rossley became the OC for the Packers and now holds that position at A&M. Bennett was the DC at Pitt and now has the same position at Baylor. Dooley now has the head position at Tennessee. Gray was with the Bills before he took the job with UT, and Vic is at Florida State.

While I will admit that we have had coaches leave to do things like sell Advocare or coach in high school, it is unfair to imply that coaching at SMU is or was career suicide.

Since Ron Meyer I do not believe a coach has been hired away from SMU other than Villoria. The others were let go and subsequently got new jobs. Big difference. No one has been knocking on the door to try and steal our coaches for a long time. Hayden was even fired before he made his mark at NTSU and Iowa. I think having people interested in our coaches is a very positive sign.

Rossley, Gregg, Cavan, Bennett. All of them were head coaches at SMU and had how many subsequent head coaching jobs? Or even interviews? Rossley is now a QB coach in college, Bennett took quite a while to ever land a job, and he was interviewing with Marshall (!); plus Wannstedt had a big say on the defensive side of the ball at Pitt. Bennett went from one of, if not the hottest DC candidates in the country to a failed HC at SMU with few public subsequent job offers.

Cavan was never heard from again, Jerry Bennett is probably working at Burger King somewhere in Texas, Rusty Burns became like an assistant QB coach at TCU after his offenses at SMU piled up quite a few yards and points w/ Justin Willis under center. I don't really see it as a topic with much debate. Extraordinarily few coaches at SMU from 1989-2009 went on to bigger, better things.

Besides, it was Phil himself who told the press that all his coaching buddies were telling him don't take the SMU job, it's a career killer. Little coach speak? Perhaps, but it was a career killer.
