ORLANDO, Fla. (SMU) - SMU women's basketball player Delisha Wills was named the Southwest Region winner of the 2010 Academic Momentum Award, presented by the Scholar-Baller program in conjunction with the National Consortium for Academics and Sports.
Wills was one of 20 male and female athletes to earn the award, which is designed to celebrate student-athletes who have overcome hardships and exemplify both the academic and athletics aspects of being a student-athlete.
The senior forward earned her degree in English, and is working to complete her teaching certification this year. On the basketball floor, Wills is 12th on the SMU all-time scoring list with 1,217 points. She missed the 2009-10 season with a knee injury, but has returned to average 10.4 points and 5.0 rebounds this season.
The Scholar-Baller program was established in 1995 as a response to concerns that the student-athlete's athletics role was superseding the student role. In an effort to address this issue, the founding members of Scholar-Baller developed a program to bridge the gap between education and sport.
