"There are no more moral victories for SMU"

Postby PonyPlayer4 » Sun Feb 13, 2011 2:40 am

Doh's post game comments. Previously he would have been happy with playing competitive with UTEP, but now he expects to win these games. It's one we should and could have won. I'm also on board with this because Im tuning into every game now with the idea we can win this game.

It is one we could have won...but It is not one we should have won. We were playing the top team in the conference on the road and were 12 point underdogs, and they have more upperclassman than we even do.

Game and gutsy effort by the ponies. yes we could have won it. but, no, definitely no reason behind the thoughts that we SHOULD have won it.

The only reason should is in the post is because we had the lead the whole second half and were in control of the game. "Should have won" is not in my post before the game....

Understood, but I am still proud of our effort, I never felt we blew it, AKA should have won...UTEP was at home and did what it took to win down the stretch.

That is what teams that should win at home do. Wish we could have pulled it out, wish we could have played better down the stretch. But I still feel that UTEP won it and we did not blow it.

we had a 9 pt lead and we let them take us out of our game; yes...it was a game we should be disappointed by. UTEP took Nyakundi out of this one. If they go with that same strategy in Dallas, maybe we go "small" on them and give Haynes more minutes? Spread the floor and slash to the hoop

I like the no more moral victories stuff, but we didn't meltdown, and we still shouldn't expect wins from this crew, just great effort. Literally, every scoring option we have has to click to get a road W. When Rob was ineffective, the writing was on the wall that we'd have a scoring drought. We did.

Our system is great, cause we're smoke and mirrors talent-wise. That said, there will be times when the opposition can just exploit a match-up and we'll have no answer. See Julyan Stone

exactly. People are starting to expect too much. We'll have to shoot lights out to beat those guys and none of Papa/Nyuk/Mangrum/Frog/Walker get days off. I'd really like to see more Clink as well. He was our 3rd leading scorer most of the year and then the bench. I didn't expect much of Losh yet, but he's pretty lost right now. I think the speed of the guards in American ball takes a minute to get used to
“When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.”- Jalen Jones

I stated it before -- and I believe PonyDoh and Papswasamustang agreed with it -- that this team has to get it every game from both Dia and Nyakundi or it has no shot to win. In other words, your best players need to be your best players.

And at UTEP, I think part of the game turned in the final 5 minutes because Nyakundi just struggled throughout and it caught up with team. The margin for error is very thin.

Looking forward to Wednesday at Cougar High.

Agreed. Only 2 players, Dia, and Nyakundi averaging double figures. Then it's a huge drop off to Jfrog as the #3 leading scorer. Really thought Haynes would be that guy. It really is amazing what this team has accomplished. Good times!
