..or...a bunch of students who actually turn out for games at a small, private, Methodist school home to one of the three primary Seminaries to the UMC, and a damn good business school, not to mention an older, cozy arena that seats about 9,000..a small, tree-lined campus that's much more aesthetic than the largest state university not far away, which has a hideous color as its primary

sound familiar?

Don't hate.

Oh, I'm going to hate. This is college sports. It's part of the fun! Being part of the 18-22 year old demographic, I feel okay with it.

Tough to hate on the Dook program, real easy to hate on the bifocal turds that inhabit Cameron. I was there for a game a few months back, and was pretty sure if a fight broke out, I could take an entire section out, and I'm not a tough guy

You don't like Cameron Crazies because they wear glasses and you could take them in a fight. Interesting. Anyway, unlike a game at Maryland, despite the rabidity of the Duke fans, a fight is not likely to break out, so you don't have to worry about demonstrating how tough you are.

And my wager is that you could call at least 90% of of all college kids "socially inept, sexually frustrated 18-22 year olds," even if they would vehemently protest such characterization. At least Duke kids channel it productively by helping their team win at home.

Quit it. Everyone knows Cameron is a dweeb-fest, chock full of pocket-protectors. They pass out freakin cheer sheets. You are correct though, fights do break out at Maryland, and we throw things, light crap on fire etc. Not too proud of that either, but I'll take it over scripted chants/cheers. the epitome of disingenuous fandom.

FWIW, Dook is basically a northern school, and I know tons of folks who've gone there over the years. Pretty much all of them make fun of the Cameron Crazies too.

Thank you! Man, try and hate on a fan base and people get up in arms. Duke does get points for "Fear the Classroom" signs they had when it was released that Maryland had a 0% grad rate for the basketball team over a period of time. Might not have been zero, but it was something really low.

Clean, funny, on point, creative. Other than that, a huge collection of folks who don't carry lunch money around anymore because it'd get taken from them way too often.

Thought this was funny, from USA Today about Terp Vasquez:

He talks about Duke all the time, how much he loves Coach K, the staff and the program itself ...

"When I first met Greivis the first thing he kept talking about was how much he loved Duke and how much he loved Coach K. I thought he was being sarcastic at first but he's very serious about it," Hairston said.

"When they [Maryland] were knocked out of the NCAA Tournament we were running a camp together at Montrose (Hairston's high school for his senior season). A kid asked him who he wanted to win the tournament and he said 'Duke all the way'. He's always been a big Duke fan and he hopes we can pull it off. He is a true Duke fan even though he plays for Maryland."

That's b/c Vas was shown tremendous respect by K at the Olympic qualifiers in Vegas after his frosh year. K put Kobe on him, cause he was the only one scoring for Venezuela. It was a highlight of Vas' life, and he let K know that. Like Juan Dixon before, Vasquez had a very love/hate & respectful relationship w/K.

I would LOVE for SMU students to have cheer sheets, or even just cheer something together, in unison that isn't "Bulls!t" when they don't like a call. The purpose of the cheer sheet is so when a creative cheer is started, and it is hard to hear or decipher what is being shouted on the other end of the court because of the noise in the building, you can kind of figure it out if you have something to reference. Anyway most of the stuff written is pretty dumb, esoteric, too complicated, etc., and as such, is never even used. Until SMU students (and blue seat and other fans) make enough noise to make cheers hard to hear in Moody, such aids are probably not needed.

Heck, SMU students need a frickin' cheat sheet to know the "official" cheers and words to fight songs, chants, etc. That would be a start.

And everyone can hate on the Cameron Crazies all they want, but the truth is, everyone wants that same atmosphere and wants their students to be like the Cameron Crazies (see, e.g. Izzone).

P.S. I didn't wear pocket protectors or glasses when I was a student at Duke. But then again, like the entire baseline section you see on tv disrupting foul shots, I was a grad student. (Let me digress and emphasize this point: when you see a huge section of students behind the basket yelling, swaying their arms, jumping up and down, etc. and the band is not in that shot, what you are seeing are ALL grad students, most of whom did not attend Duke undergrad, and all of whom had to camp out to get special grad tickets. They essentially make up around 1/4 of the Crazies. Can you imagine getting SMU business, law, and divinity school students to our games, let alone participating like that? Wouldn't it be awesome?) I will say this, the Duke band pretty much sucked, and from what I can tell listening on tv, still kind of does. I can say this since I was in it. But at least they were allowed to play during timeouts instead of listening to lame ads from obscure companies like Clipper Magazine.

By the way, back on topic. It's kind of kooky but fun that Doh brought the kids in the locker room. The more he can get students to feel connected to the team, the better.

Unfortunately, due to a long planned family trip with the in-laws to Disneyworld next week, I will be missing the next 2 home games, thus jeopardizing my claims to superfandom. I am sad to miss what could be the most electric atmosphere in Moody in a long time. I want a full report on whether "Operation Big Balls" has yielded results.

What a novel idea. Talk about allowing the students to be a true part of the program! How many BB programs around the country allow students into the locker room post game? My guess is those 'frat' boys will be talking about that experience for the rest of their lives and certainly will be more likely to come to games and get involve. They are literally part of the program now.
