from Sunday's DMN: SMU v. Texas Tech

Postby MrMustang1965 » Sun Sep 05, 2004 2:18 am

UNIVERSITY PARK – SMU coach Phil Bennett used two quarterbacks against Texas Tech.

Bennett started sophomore Chris Phillips, then used junior college transfer Tony Eckert in the fourth quarter.

Phillips was 12-for-28 for 109 yards and one interception. He rushed 12 times for 75 yards and directed two scoring drives, both field goals.

Eckert entered with 7:19 to play in the game and went 6-of-9 for 53 yards. He moved SMU into the end zone by engineering a 13-play, 76-yard drive that took 4:18. Running back Cedrick Dorsey capped the drive with a 7-yard touchdown run with 3:07 to play.

Twice Eckert dropped the snap but was able to get a pass away. He is more of dropback passer, while Phillips is more mobile.

It would appear Eckert is No. 2 on the depth chart. Last week, Bennett said there wasn't a No. 2 quarterback, that Eckert and Jerad Romo would share duties.

Bennett said he would only change quarterbacks based on the situation. Bennett probably used Eckert late in the game to throw the ball.

The Mustangs trailed 27-6 when Eckert was inserted.

Phillips, who started five games last season, looked good on the Mustangs' first possession of the game.

He went 4-for-6 for 25 yards and carried four times for 22 yards as the Mustangs took a 3-0 lead. Chris McMurtray made a 35-yard field goal.

But Phillips struggled after that. He completed one of eight passes for zero yards and one interception to finish the first half.

Ford Stadium attendance record
Texas Tech fans came out to support their team, helping Ford Stadium set a stadium attendance record of 34,689. The stadium has a seating capacity of 32,000, but there were several standing room tickets sold. The record was 32,267, when SMU opened the stadium in 2000 against Kansas. The stadium has had three crowds of at least 30,000. The other time was when 32,000 showed for the game against Texas Tech in 2002.

Youngest team in nation? SMU
Underclassmen make up 76.1 percent of SMU's roster, making the Mustangs the youngest team in the nation. Baylor is the second youngest, with 70.3 percent.

Briefly ...
Andrew Tubbs, son of SMU men's basketball coach Jimmy Tubbs , is a walk-on freshman fullback. Tubbs played football at Bishop Dunne. ... SMU has two new looks to its uniforms. There are no names on the backs of the jerseys, and there is a silver outline to the Mustang on the helmets.
