While Arlen sounds fascinating, especially the zoo with calves and ponies that is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, the fact that it is located "near the border of Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico" might cause me to get lost when I come into Dallas for the games.

I would say Granbury or somewhere near there. The traffic north of 635 on 75 and 35 is becoming out of hand.

East or Southwest is my suggestion. 67 isn't too bad to get to SMU games.

I would suggest you look at Granbury as well. Might also want to take a look at Glen Rose or some of the towns, Azle for examaple, around White Settlement Lake, just north of Ft. Worth. My Dad use to love fishing at Lake O the Pines, close to Gilmer, Marshall, Longview and about two hours from Dallas if memory serves me correctly.

For what its worth, as I started reading this thread, I was also thinking of Hideaway.

Our family had property near there.

My family bought property there in the early 1960's. I think we sold the house in about 1978. Fond childhood memories of Hideaway.

I was going to say the area around Lake Whitney or even Meridian. South rather than north.

One thing about East Texas - say you are an hours drive from "Dallas," well you are still a long way from SMU after you reach the city limits. Its even further to DFW if you want to fly somewhere - maybe better to leave from Shreveport if a trip by air is planned. Of course the gambling dens in Shreveport are more convenient if that is a sometime interest. I would agree that you can find nice quiet places in East Texas.

the Tyler airport has multiple flights a day to Houston and DFW..flown in and out of there many times. When I lived in south Texas and needed to go to east Texas often, I would have my pick of flying into Tyler, Longview, or Shreveport. I liked Shreveport's airport the least for a number of reasons.

Now that I think about it, I got pulled over on my way back to Shreveport from the 44-0 or whatever it was loss at Amon Carter a few years ago.

as I recall there are some rather nice lake homes for sale in tool, tx on the Cedar Creek Reservoir...the developer got hit at the beginning of the downturn and the bank was trying to unload these brand new places w/ 2 story docks and great views for a real good price.

Here's my problem. Mrsmrydel has a fear of water, so lake front is no bueno. She will let me have a stock pond to put some bass or catfish in and have something for the grandkids to do. But that is even a stretch. She will not fly over water for fear of drowning. I try to explain the impact would kill her but she does not trust that to be true.

So what we actually need is just a secluded bit of acreage with a stock pond. Maybe a casino nearby.
