Museum Thursday Evening Lecture: “The Illuminator’s Table”
Who: Sylvana Barrett, Artist and Technical Art Historian
What: Master illuminators of manuscripts, using the finest materials, created works of
intricate detail and jewel-like brilliance. Working on velvety skins of translucent
parchment, artisans enlivened their pages with images rendered in luminous
pigments from the semi-precious stones lapis, azurite and malachite, rare colored
earths and exotic, imported dyes. Complex decorative schemes further
embellished with delicate leaves of hammered gold, burnished to a brilliant shine,
may make production of these masterworks seem incomprehensible, yet the
process was relatively simple once mastered, remaining consistent over many
centuries. Join artist Sylvana Barrett in an intimate, first-hand examination of
these rare, historic materials and techniques. Preparation of paint from original
pigments and binders, the painting process itself and the technique of raised and
burnished leaf gilding on handmade parchment will highlight the demonstration.
Following the demonstration an interactive session will allow audience members
to handle materials created during the program. Held in conjunction with the
exhibition The Lost Manuscripts from the Sistine Chapel, the demonstration will
refer directly to specific works within the exhibit.

Pollock Gallery Exhibit: Selections 1: “I Went Through My Bin Again (with Open Robe)”:
A Very Short Introduction to Frances Stark

What: Frances Stark is an artist who writes and a writer who draws. Through much
of her varied production, Stark has reshaped and redescribed from the point
of view of a female artist the intellectual and physical activities typically
associated with writing. Her work is a vivid, gently humorous reconstruction of
the foibles and frustrations of authorship. At the heart of Stark’s work is an
abiding love of self-reflection and skepticism; the inventive expression of such
values provides the viewer with a constant reminder of the fragility of the
artist’s enterprise. The exhibit is organized by Michael Corris, chair of SMU’s
Division of Art, with the cooperation of The Rachofsky House and other
notable Dallas collections. “Selections 1” is the first in a series of biennial
exhibitions curated by noted guest curators, critics, writers and artists focusing
on contemporary artists, topics and issues of their choosing.

Sat.

Comini Lecture Series: “Igniting Scholastic Feminism in the 1960s and Beyond”
Who: Dr. Alessandra Comini, SMU University Distinguished Professor of Art History
Emerita
What: As a young assistant professor of art history at Columbia University in the
turbulent 1960s, when the university was brought to a standstill by student strikes,
Alessandra Comini confronted the sexism of her own discipline. Rebelling, she
dared to give equal time to Rosa Bonheur when teaching about Realism and
Gustave Courbet. Along with Ann Sutherland Harris and Linda Nochlin, she was
among the first scholars to apply revisionist principles to teaching and publishing.
When she and fellow feminist Eleanor Tufts arrived at SMU in 1974, quiet but
jolting shock waves were felt round the university and beyond. Now two
generations of their students are still making waves as they work to right the
balance.
When: Mar. 24 at 6 p.m.
Where: McCord Auditorium in Dallas Hall, 3225 University Blvd. on SMU campus,
Dallas (75205)
Cost: FREE
Info: Call 214-768-2698.

Music at the Meadows: Orchestra of New Spain
What: The history of music in the Cathedral of Toledo is rivaled in importance in Spain
only by that of the Cathedral of Seville. Toledo’s music manuscripts are a

iconic city. This special concert is being held in conjunction with the Meadows
Museum exhibition The Lost Manuscripts from the Sistine Chapel. Soloists will
present works of two composers who made trips to Toledo for the express
purpose of donating works to the library – Cristobal de Morales and Francisco
Guerrero – as well as examples of chant found in the Cathedral and
contemporaneous works from other parts of Spain.

Wednesday Morning Lecture Series: “The Generation of 98: The Shapers of the
Generation of 27 and of Modern Spain”

Who: Dr. Luis Martin, Professor Emeritus of History, SMU
What: The “Generation of 98” is one of the most distinctive and brilliant generations
of Spanish thinkers, who came to their intellectual maturity around the time of
the Spanish-American War and who, with heavy hearts, witnessed the final
loss of the Spanish Empire. They all became “public intellectuals” whose
writings, meant for the general public and not just for academicians, analyzed
Spanish history, culture, and character in a relentless search for the causes of
the national catastrophe of 1898. They also strived to pierce into the future to
show how Spain, humiliated by the U.S. and stripped of her last imperial
trappings, could once again be true to herself and keep having an impact on
the rest of the world, this time not by her mighty military and economic power
but by the strength of her character and the universality of her vision and culture.
When: Wednesdays through Apr. 27 (no lecture on March 16), 10:30 a.m.
Where: Bob Smith Auditorium, Meadows Museum, 5900 Bishop Blvd. on SMU campus,
Dallas (75205)

Meadows Museum Exhibit: “Grit & Glory: Six Man Football – Photographs by
Laura Wilson”

What: Timed to coincide with Super Bowl XLV, the Meadows Museum presents an
exhibition exploring the regional tradition of six-man football. Acclaimed
photographer Laura Wilson became intrigued by six-man football in 1991,
and spent the next 11 years taking thousands of pictures of six-man games in
towns throughout Texas. Using a pared-down technique meant to match the
intensity and directness of the sport itself, Wilson’s photographs convey the
spirit of the sport and the passion for the game. The exhibition explores the
significance of the sport to Texas, and features images included in Wilson’s
book, Grit and Glory: Six-Man Football.
When: Through Apr. 23, 2011. Museum hours 10-5 Tues.-Sat.; 10-9 Thurs.; 1-5 Sun.

1960s, beginning with its initial production held in conjunction with SMU’s first
commencement exercises. It also includes photographs of a number of
now-destroyed Dallas performance venues, such as several downtown movie
houses and Fair Park’s Cycle Park Theatre, as well as a number of items
documenting performances of the Little Theatre of Dallas (1921-43). The Dallas
State Fair and Exposition of 1886, predecessor of the State Fair of Texas, and

Very cool. SMU has some great events on campus, and nobody reaches more SMU types than this site. Hope this becomes a regular addition to the Around the Hilltop board.
