If we've got those stellar players suiting up next season, how about a stellar coach? ...or will Coach Doherty be warmed-up and ready to go after 5 seasons?

I think Hobbie and Mangino were great additions and will keep moving this program forward under Doh.

If they stay. I'm sure they will bail first chance they get.

why's that?

I thought Mangino roomed with Doh when they worked on Wall Street, so it's not like his mannerisms or personality or whatever are a big shock to him

What coach wouldn't want this job now? Play below mediocre basketball for half a decade (is he really batting .400?), don't win post season games, don't go to post season tournaments, and get paid upwards of half a million dollars a year. Not a bad gig, we should all be so lucky!

Worst SMU hire in the past 50 years? Even PB had one good year and could have (should have?) went to a bowl.

listen, I'm not his biggest fan, but the guy is coming off his best season here. Yes, we haven't made it to the ncaa tournament yet, but I don't think its time to ditch him. If he slips next season, I won't fight you on it. If he stays flat, okay, let's see what's out there. But, if he improves again next year, I'm fine continuing to head in the right direction. It is our first winning season since joining CUSA. yes i understand not in conference play - thank you for picking apart "in" instead of "since joining."

I don't know what to do about Doh, time to make a decision is not when your mad, disappointed and frustrated. But, there are plenty of people that recognize what a great opportunity exists as the head coach of our program and believe the program is on the verge of a major turnaround, with or without Doh. Winning in football is the first step in raising the "tide" that will float all "boats".

This isn't breaking news that Doherty's coming back. The late Roy Scheider agreed with my point that if Doherty can't get all the heralded new faces to blend in 2011-12, then he's probably gone.

There's a couple for that:

1. He recruited these kids or convinced the transfers that SMU was right for them. And I'm fine with that. Give Doherty the right crash and burn or succeed.

2. If he's here through 2012-13 (I think that's right), then Orsini can slow play the talk of an extension or throw an extension that carries very little weight or something like.

3. Finanically, the athletic department could be in a better position to absorb the buyout especially if the football season ticket sales are better, attendance is better and so forth. In theory, football does pay for everything.

4. Like papawasamustang, I was the first in line to say "Get Doherty out of here!'' But politically, he bought himself a year with the schedule and better-than-expected CUSA performance. Maybe it was one of Doherty's best coaching years in his life.

LOL, he didn't stand a chance in years 2 or 3, the rest of it is 500 ball, which is par for the course at SMU, and we're definitely trending up in every area. You don't fire a coach at SMU whose team had a winning year, you know-nothing turdmonkeys. That's like firing a black head coach after two years...oh yeah. Not to mention the team was very well-coached this year, and I bet we try and buy into a bogus post-season tourney.

This board is littered w/people who didn't post all season. Weak sauce

Amazing what a little common sense brings to the discussion. It's incredible how many people seem to operate with the idea that SMU athletics and the basketball program will only exist for the next 300 days and not the next 100 years.

I would have to say that, although I was all in favor of getting rid of Doherty, this season has given me respect for the program again. We finished weakly, but it's not exactly surprising. 4 game losing streak by a combined 9 points, and we have been playing with 7-8 players most of the season. They're tired, mentally, more than anything. The coaching has been a vast improvement on previous years. Last night was a prime example. I know that people were livid with Doh for the mass subbing at the start of the second half, but personally I think it was the right thing to do, and it paid off. A little rest for the starters and they came back in and got back in the game. They had started the second half flat, and Doh did something about it.

I was proud of the lads last night even though they did not bring their best game. I was not so proud of the SMU support which was virtually non-existent. Not being negative about those who were there, just surprised by not seeing a single SMU shirt in the crowd (I'm sure there were some down near the bench, but I just didn't see them).

It's a shame my fellow Mustang fans can't add. We finished 8-9 against C-USA. Of our 8 wins, 3 were quality wins. 9 of our 17 wins were against joke competition and our season ended with a complete meltdown vs. Rice, losing 4 in a row, and 6 of our last 8. Berger said it best, 64-89 in 5 years. 0 C-USA tournament wins is a disgrace. "Progress" made this year was simply due to the fact that there was nowhere to go but up. I'm sorry, but my expectations are higher then hovering around .500 and winning 0 C-USA tournament games in 1/2 a decade while paying 1/2 mil per season for this coach. Unacceptable.

Well, then they haven't met anyone's expectations since 1992-93. That's enough out of you!

The knee jerk reactions from some are simply hilarious. Great comedy around the basketball forum over the last 15 hours.
