The LAST time SMU won in a Post Season Tournament

Postby ponyscott » Sat Mar 12, 2011 10:54 am

Just so you know the last time for a win in a National Invitational ( NOT counting a Conference Tournament) was in 1988 in the NCAA's--------- Dave Bliss took SMU to 4 NCAA's and went 1-1 in each version. I think we beat Notre Dame that year....??

Yep baby steps indeed...just glad to hear mens Bball being mentioned in a post season National Tourny ( even buy in one counts)....that 87-88 season was something else RG.
I just hope that Dia comes out this time to dominate and make up for the last few games he played this season, which were not impressive...a reprieve from the govna son...

Last time we were in "the show", I was there in Chicago..SMU v. BYU..lost by 8-10, I think...sat on the runway at O'Hare for something like 3 hours...painful, but fun trip...I guess my whole deal on the CIT boils down to this...based on the C-USA this year and the fact that we proved we coud beat anybody AND the fact that we can shoot...I am thinking / fantasizing..we get hot, we can win this thing and go to the dance, or at the least, make it to the finals and go to the NIT..so, we [deleted] in our nest (AGAIN!!!) and fall to [deleted] Rice and end up in the CIT, must admit, never heard of it...I get pissed / cynical / sacastic and am railed for it, from ALL the same folks who lecture us on "settling", moral victories, etc., etc...sorry, losing to Rice and paying to go to the CIT sucks! Nice "little run" this year fellas, thanks for giving me some hope...must admit, we had our moments. When does football start? GO PONIES..BEAT Quinnipiac!!

I know we all got a little overzealous there for a minute, which is not a bad thing. However, misguided expectations will give you a hangover the next day. We were never in the running for NIT or NCAA unless we locked up regular season (NIT) or tournament (NCAA) championships.

Thanks Mustangxc...what should I expect from this CIT "opportunity"...I went on the CIT web site and listened to ALL of the coaches praise this tourney, pump the potential, talk about momentum and next season elevated expectations...ok, I'll bite...we win a couple of games, is that a mouth foaming moment? Play for the title? I could get into that..win it..I say right on, build from there...BEAT Rider!!

I thought that was the year before. Wasn't he already in office (albeit almost alone) by the fall of 1987?
Maybe I'm mixed up. It's been a few years.

None of it is mouth-foaming, it's just fun and has perks. More games/practices, decent competition, a chance to see the seniors again, home game at Moody etc. W/the talent coming in, you just hope for more forward momentum, and that we become legit in the next few. You have to understand, they made this entire schedule, just to get a chance at the CIT or CBI. They had a tremendous amount of turmoil end of last season, and they put a plan in place to manufacture some momentum. Not only did the system work on the floor, they actually thought macro in terms of generating some forward progress. Now they can say postseason. Next year, you try to step up to CBI or NIT etc. From there NCAA etc.

FWIW, we didn't pay to get in, we paid for a home game.

Outside of the NCAA tournament it is very difficult to predict NIT, CBI, and CIT results because so many of the results depend on team morale. Teams that are excited to be playing additional games win, while teams that are bummed about missing out on a more prestigious tournament or would rather be spending their spring break vacations at the beach will likely lose unless there is a huge talent disparity between them and their opponent. Even so, the will to win is the biggest factor in these peripheral tournaments. I would hope SMU is very hungry to prove itself, but we'll have to wait and see.

— BYU’s LAST NCAA win was in 1993 as a No. 7 seed in Chicago when the Cougars defeated SMU, 80-71. BYU then lost to No. 2-seed Kansas, 90-76, in the second round that year after defeating SMU. BYU has since lost in the first round in its last seven NCAA appearances. I think the SMU curse on BYU has them rattled as they have lost now 8 straight NCAA games since that lonely win against the Ponies!

My freshman year at SMU. Went to Reunion when we beat Florida. Threw up when we blew that huge lead to Arkansas at home. Got separated from my friends and came back on the MC bus on the trip to Austin. Came home to Las Vegas and had my brother place bets for me in the SWC tourney final vs Baylor and first round vs Notre Dame. I cleaned up.

Loved how we fought Duke. Really thought 88-89 would be great bc Kato was back along w Longino and Alexander. And then....

Scott - BYU won in the first round last year to snap that streak. Think they beat Florida.
