Turned the corner...

Postby argyle hoss » Wed Mar 16, 2011 10:05 am

What corner have we turned? I will be at the game tonite and don't miss them at all, but I don't feel like we have turned a corner. Without McMurry and Dallas Christian, we would be only 500. Coaches get off on sayings just to keep attention away from a losing team. We did win some games. They were exciting to me and I enjoyed them. The kids did play hard and well. We are what we are and the fans and alums see that. Go Mustangs!!!

We lost our last 6 games by an average of 4 points and the last 4 by a total of 9 points. It is disappointing that we could pulled a few of those out, especially the Rice game, but there is no question that we improved over the course of the season and with the ineligible players and recruits coming in the program is moving to a point where it has not been in years.

Without McMurry and Dallas Christian we would be over .500. We are 17-14!

seeing a truly efficient offensive and defensive system, coupled w/the upgrade in talent, is all I really needed to see this year. Having a winning season w/this seasons roster is nothing short of remarkable, so I'm in.

Doh starting to implement systems suited for the talent he has. It makes a world of difference.

That being said, I hope next year we have a more dynamic offensive system more suited to the roster full of studs we will have.

it's going to be the same system, but I think they'll fast break a little more, and not feel compelled to eat 30 of the 35 every possession.

No question the team is trending up, and it has been a long time since we can say that. Had we played all season like we did starting in January, we would have beaten UALR and probably TCU (which looked like it got worse over the course of the season), and maybe a couple of others. I hate to see Papa Dia and the rest of the senior class leave. They have endured some tough seasons, and I'm happy they're getting a taste of postseason play. I don't like the Oral Roberts matchup — they seem to have several guys who can get hot — but hopefully tonight is just the start of our postseason.

What would we be without:

McMurry-NCAA Division 3
Dallas Christian-National Christian College AA
Wayland Baptist-NAIA
Central Arkansas-341 of 345
Grambling-332
Alabama st-309
Southeastern Missouri St-308

About 10-14 against teams not hovering around the Bottom 10% or below

not to mention
Lamar 268
Portland St 263

and not to forget those tough losses to:

UC Riverside 266
Louisiana Tech 247

It is easy to bag on the early schedule but in fact this team was competitive in the CUSA which can not be said about any team in the Doh era. The team found some chemistry and played well.

We do not need the naybobs of negativism when there are real nonsunshine reasons to be happy with the season and to be optimistic in looking forward to the coming seasons.

Stallion - could you not say the same thing of our football team? Our wins were pretty underwhelming there also. Yet you feel pretty good about it because you can see improvement.

Exact same thing with basketball.

No its not the same thing-and I'm hardly considered a football homer. Playing 1/3rd of your schedule against teams with the funding, resources and presence of those teams is exactly like SMU playing East Texas St, Sul Ross, Texas A&I and Texas Southern in Football and going 3-5 with the rest of the schedule and claiming what a great year they had. Look at those schools-they are Division 1A in name only. They shouldn't even be counted as exhibitions. SMU had a winning record in CUSA and tied for the West Championship in Football. SMU Basketball didn't even win half its games on the season against CUSA teams. I'm criticizing especially SMU BB but all teams across the country who schedule these crap games and expect the fans to pay for. Not me-I'm addicted to SMU Football and quite frankly SMU Football has kept scheduling of manure to a minimum. Although I once went to every SMU BB game for 30 years, I learned I can live without watching SMU compete against teams I've never heard about and don't care [deleted] about. I'm not alone-but I'll take the shots as the strawman for telling the truth. NCAA athletics would be much better if these body-bag games were eliminated. Doherty and SMU should be ashamed of these insulting preseason schedules. If those are the types of programs they think we should be competing against then I'm just not going to have any part of it-just like I wouldn't have supported SMU Athletics if they dropped to Division 1-AA

Where would we be if we didn't defeat NCAA tournament bound-Memphis?
Where would we be if we didn't defeat 20-win team So. Miss?
Where would we be fi we didn't defeat CUSA tournament semifinalist Tulsa.

Look, we all bagged on the ridiculous non-conference schedule. But I'm goiing to watch SMU play in a postseason game for the first time ever. And I'm fine with it.

And this will be my first game of the year.

I'm excited to go.

Blah, you could easily say the same thing about football. Not to mention CUSA football is much worse than hoops. I don't think anyone loved the OOC schedule, but every school signs up their share of cupcakes. SMU playing Dallas whomever, is no different than Northwestern St in football or Stephen F Austin, or Nebraska playing UT Chattanooga, or OSU playing Akron and Toledo. None of it is competitive and debatable. It doesn't change the progress we saw on the court in terms of system, efficiency and execution. No one is fooling ourselves that this years team was anything more than extremely competitive. You aren't a strawman, you're a contrarian [deleted] that doesn't watch basketball games.

Call me crazy, but I am just as excited about this tourney as I was about the Armed Forces Bowl, I will be even more excited if they can win a couple of games.

If I was calling the shots, I would take advantage of daylight savings time and have some form of ‘Boulevard event’ beforehand, have free admission to the game and try to make my revenues off concessions.

Consider it a big THANK YOU to loyal SMU fans while letting them know that we are 'turning the corner'.
