Re: Chris SandersSwami,
I am glad you are good friends with the guy. I was only around him when he acted like a complete idiot who thought he was all that. In my opinion a guy who doesn't have much success at SMU and then transfers shouldn't think he is god's gift to the world. That being said there is no shame in transferring. My point is that if Snacks had endeared himself to SMU a little more and not driven around in his blazer and Lexus with the windows rolled down and rap music blaring he would have been more popular and maybe gotten more support from alums and students. The guy thought he was head and shoulders above everyone else and I do have a problem with that. I don't know why you keep mentioning Rosley. That guy didn't have that successful of a winning percentage at SMU and from what I heard he ran a slap-dick program. I have some examples but don't think it is necessary to get into it. I'm just giving the guy **** for throwing in the towel. He had a really promising future and I think he gave up. I think it was obvious to a lot of people. I was friends with a bunch of guys on the team and they said the same things. As far as play calling goes, Pony Student, I think you misinterpreted what I said. Swami was the one who said Sanders left because Cavan had the offensive game plan to run first pass second. I was simply stating that we had a lot of close games in 1998 and we were down by less than a TD. My point was that whatever a coach's philosophy, when you are losing with little time remaining in the game you don't RUN THE BALL, YOU PASS. If Chris was such a big stud with a cannon why didn't he make the big play or the big pass? If he was changing the plays he still wasn't making the right one and, I was never blaming Sanders for play selection. I was blaming the coaching staff, but he still wasn't making the plays. If he had made some of those plays then we would have won those three close games. If we had one those three close games we might have gone to a bowl. That is my point. I completely belive that some of the coaches have made some really poor decisions when it comes to play calling but if he was changing the plays you have to wonder who was really at fault. I have never heard that Sanders was changing plays so I really don't believe that. Anyone, please dispute but I think I bring up valid points. Like I said before, I am not wishing the guy bad luck or any harm. I just don't think he was that good. If I am some idiot frat guy in your eyes fine, to me you are just a really dumb football jock who is kissing Sanders [deleted] because he is on the practice squad of a NFL team. Go Falcons! You shouldn't take things so personal Swami.
Re: Chris SandersWow....we do have some passion on this board after all. No fisticuffs though, please.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
Re: Chris SandersTaking nothing personal MAC...I'm sorry you didn't like the way Sanders performed. I'm sorry he, in your eyes, acted head and shoulders above the rest of everyone else (jealous perhaps?). I bring up Rosley only because that was the entire reason Chris came to SMU. If Cavan had been here to recruit Chris, he probably would have never come.
Think what you want to about the guy, I could really care less when it comes down to it. But dont think for a second he just gave up. He was one of the most dedicated athletes we had at the program. I'd like to know who your friends are that were on the team. My apologies for the frat remark, I'm sure you are quite intelligent and know your football. One continous party, dude! Oh and to end the debate, Chris did change one play in his career. We were playing at Navy in the last game of the year and were winning. Cavan and Briner were calling to run the ball and the clock out. Chris decided to get Albert Johnson (Miami Dolphins) one last reception. Big deal.
Re: Chris SandersTo MAC:
I think that you are more concerned with how Chris performed off of the field than how he performed on the field. Why the harsh feelings...did he steal some girl from you with his rap music and Lexus?????? It doesn't matter if you thought that the guy was the biggest dumdass on the face of the planet...You still have nothing to substanciate your claim that he was a crappy QB. You obviously have no idea what you are talking about when it come to football. Possibly if you actually played football (intermurals doesn't count frat boy) you would know a thing or two about the game. Let's see.... The opion of former players that were actually on the field w/ Chris is that he was a good QB.... The opinion of a former frat boy who didn't play football, wasn't in the huddle, and only observed from a distance is that Chris wasn't very good. It is tough deciding who is the reliable source here.....

Re: Chris SandersDidn't he lose his job at QB? I thought that is why he left SMU. I never accused the guy of switching plays or making adjustments. I didn't say that.
I agree that Cavan's coaching decisions weren't the best but if Sanders was such the great QB I would think that he could have made things happen. Also, if he was so great why wouldn't Cavan change things around to suit his strengths? Obviously, some of the problems can be contributed to Cavan not turning out to be the best coach, but I still think the guy was somewhat of a bust at SMU. I think I have said that all along. He wasn't that good at SMU and that is a fact. If I am wrong, prove to me why he was so good. You can say all you want about offenses but the guy didn't cut it. Nothing wrong with transferring and it turned out to be the right call for him with all that he accomplished at a D-1AA college. Maybe he needed some time to grow up and mature a little. I have also said that I wish the guy the best but I am giving him some **** for leaving. I don't understand what your last comment is about? He changed the play just so he could get Johnson one last pass for the season? Is that what you meant? I can appreciate that. But as you said I am just a dumb frat guy who is continuously partying. My friends who were on the team liked Sanders but I think they really knew he wasn't getting the job done. Like I said, if he had gotten the job done in 1998 we might have gone to a bowl game. Remember our pathetic loss to Ole Miss? I miss spoke about his arm strength and I am sorry about that, but having a strong arm does no one any good when you can't hit your receivers when it counts. Swami, all you can do is defend Sanders by saying how good a football player he is. Please give me some proof, other than you being his very very best friend. Also, I am jealous. I am jealous of all my friends who went to other schools that got to go to Bowl games. Hell, even TCU has been to a couple bowl games in the last couple of years. I'm sorry that I would have liked to go to some bowl games while I was in college. [This message has been edited by Mac (edited 12-14-2001).]
Re: Chris SandersStangaholic,
I was friends with the a guy who started all four years on offense except for a couple games when he was a freshman and a guy who started at Safety for his junior and senior year but missed some playing time because he was injured. My friend who was a safety like Sanders but thought he wasn't that good. My friend who played running back was very good friends, them being the same grade, but he thought he couldn't get the job done. Is that proof. I thought I gave some examples of how he didn't perform well in the three crucial losses in 1998. Two of those were overtime losses that we should have won. The guy couldn't hit receivers.
Re: Chris SandersSwami,
So is Coats as good a football player as Sanders? Just because you are friends with these guys you think they are awesome? If you were coach you would have Wes Danaher playing tailback, Pennington at fullback, Devoss at corner, and Coats as your assistant. Those guys would dominate the WAC baby. Go for it. You should be Bennet's graduate assistant. We would be a lock for the Rosebowl.
Re: Chris SandersWhat proof can I give you on a message board? You have to remember something, football is played on the field, not in cyberspace. It is something you have to go through and experience. You had to see him work day in and day out. Sorry you did not have the skill or the talent to do so.
I still to this day don't know if Chris lost his job or Cavan took it away. We got back from the Air Force game and Cavan told us Chris played in one of the gutsiest, most competitive games he has seen in his life. Said he was proud to be able to caoch a player like that. Said he would take him on his team anyday. Then, just like Chris and Ramon happened, so did Chris and Josh, then Josh and Kelan, then Kelan and Page (trend?). I agree with you, Chris did not do accomplish everthing we wanted at SMU. He was however our best chance to, given the right circumstances. And as for changing the play, it really makes no football sense, at all. It is called giving a guy who is playiong his last game at SMU on more chance to catch the ball. We were up by a couple of scores and there was about a minute left. You should know better, I'm sure you have bailed out your frat brother from jail when it was probably better for him to sit there and think about what he did to get arrested. You were looking out for him. Chris was doing the same for AJ. Broters for life Bro!
Re: Chris SandersThanks for your insight and tell Pennington hey for me.

Re: Chris SandersSwami, if you and this guy keep going at it I am going to rename this site the Phi Delta ThetaFans. My take is that Sanders was not everything he thought he was. However, he tried his hardest to be as good as he thought. Mac, Sanders did not win the Heisman or a national championship like we all would have liked but he tried and more importantly cared. Let me tell you something, caring alone is much more than the vast majority of the other guys did. I am not going to suck Snax off because he does not deserve it but I will always appreciate his effort and with the woes of SMU football has been experiencing for the last 15 years, well you can't ask for much more.
Re: Chris Sanderssaguarostang,
I appreciate your remarks. No bull****. Partly I am just giving good old Ben a little run for his money. I don't think Snacks was all that but you are completely right. He did try and I guess I am dissapointed that it didn't work out. He was cocky and it bothers me when someone is cocky and can't back it up. That is all I am saying. I think Big Ben took things a little personal. I am just screwing around so don't take things so serious. I still think I make valid arguments. Numbers don't lie and his numbers ain't that good. I am out. ~~ MAC
Re: Chris SandersFair enough Mac. Now, lets let this one die and since I am far away from everything I want some more info with the new coach if any is available.
Re: Chris SandersProudPonyPa,
Your post has nothing to do with what we were talking about. All I was saying that the run & shoot is a very old offensive scheme and most teams/program don't use it anymore. I was using the wishbone offense as an example to another outdated offense. I think you missed the point. Whatever works, works but I don't think the run & shoot is a style of offense that is best suited for most college teams.
