Nader is a left-wing extremist and a flat out cook. He's no different from those right wing nut jobs who want to abolish the IRS and meet at the Showboat Hotel in Las Vegas to nominate their presidential candidate.

For those who think this thing has any teeth to it, keep dreaming. Just get back to us in 3 years and let us know how well Nader is doing building support much less getting past the University President's gatekeeper.

Next topic, please.

Who cares what Nader wants to have happen? If you eliminate athletic scholarships, you'll just see schools giving full tuition "academic scholarships based upon need or extracurricular merit" to athletes.

WASHINGTON -- Consumer advocate Ralph Nader is calling for the elimination of college athletic scholarships, saying the move is necessary to "de-professionalize" college athletes.

Nader's League of Fans, a group aimed at reforming sports, proposes that the scholarships be replaced with need-based financial aid. He says that would help restore academic integrity to college sports.

The Associated Press obtained a copy of the proposal Thursday, ahead of its official release.

Nader, a former presidential candidate, argues that his plan would also help reduce the "win-at-all-costs" mentality in high schools, by reducing the incentive of college scholarships.

Why would the NCAA even give this a thought when the they refuse to understand the merits of a playoff system in for D1 football

I'm still wondering what a "flat-out cook" is. Never seen that on Food Network. I believe only mrydel could make sense of that.

Actually one supposes that ole Mitch is challenged in his spelling and meant "kook," which many of us might agree with.

And Nader's name was associated with a cook book of family Lebanese recipes I waw one time. Probably the best thing he ever wrote.

I suppose its been discussed at length on ponyfans and elsewhere, but someone remind me of (A) the BCS schools that are publicly complaining about costs, and (B) the BCS schools with sports programs thought to be in trouble financially but who are not complaining, and (C) the state governments that have talked about cutting back NCAA Divison I-A football and BB programs. (Cutbacks in the non revenue sports and/or Title IX sports are something else again.)

If revenue enhancements becaome necessary for the big state schools I'd say its possible we'll see a NCAA super division with as few as sixty - seventy members and the BCS series and top TV revenues will be a lot more exclusive than at present. SMU will not necessarily benefit.

On the other hand, scholarship limits and eligibility time limits might be further reduced to lower costs (no red shirting, period) and SMU might or not benefit.

Mostly though I don't think anything will come of this - Nader, having helped screw up several things he has neen interested in, is trying to find something else to mess with.
