2011 SMU Pro Day report (with videos)

Postby PonyPride » Mon Apr 04, 2011 5:10 pm

Just got back from Pro Day.

I counted scouts and/or coaches from 16 NFL teams: Buffalo Bills, Tennessee Titans, Green Bay Packers, Indianapolis Colts, San Diego Chargers, Atlanta Falcons, New Orleans Saints, Carolina Panthers, Baltimore Ravens, San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks, Denver Broncos, Miami Dolphins, Oakland Raiders, Minnesota Vikings and Dallas Cowboys. There also were a couple of representatives from the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League. (There might have been more NFL and/or CFL scouts there, but those are the ones I identified.)

There were 12 played on display, including 11 SMU players: linebacker Youri Yenga, cornerback Bennie Thomas, linebacker Justin Smart, wide receiver Aldrick Robinson, cornerback Sterling Moore, linebacker Pete Fleps, wide receiver/tight end Pat Fleming, defensive lineman (working out as a linebacker) Mickey Dollens, punter/kicker Matt Szymanski, running back Chris Butler and former defensive lineman Jesse Andrew. Also working out was quarterback Zack Eskridge of Midwestern State.

The players were measured and weighed before being tested in the vertical jump, broad jump and bench press (counting repetitions at the NFL-standard 225 pounds) in the SMU weight room, after which everyone moved outside to Gerald J. Ford Stadium's new turf for the 40-yard dash, the short shuttle, 3-cone shuttle, the 60-yard shuttle and assorted position drills.

Players were measured and weighed and tested at the same time, so we don't have all of the numbers, but here's what we have (for the 40, the time listed is the faster of two runs ... for most, there was a difference when running with the wind vs. running into the wind):

Two disclaimers:
1. Some tests were being done simultaneously, which is why I didn't get everything. (Also, as a videographer/photographer, I'm a good writer. Translation: some of the videos didn't come out very clearly.)
2. Two of the three webmasters (Webmaster and SmooPower) could have made these into some Spielberg-esque video montage, complete with music and video effects that would garner PonyFans.com a long-overdue Academy Award. Alas, comparing their technical knowledge to mine (notice I'm not even sure how to mute the sound, so people can be heard barking out results of different events simultaneously) is like comparing Usain Bolt's speed or Blake Griffin's leaping ability to ... well ... mine, so I'm afraid these are going to be a series of unattached little snippets. Sorry.

Too bad Pat Fleming and Al Robinson were not redshirted, their freshmen year was basically wasted. Could you imagine, Al coming back for his 5th year?

Youri's workout was the most impressive to me. No numbers for Al?

From the numbers, it looks like Justin Smart was a bit better at everything than Yuri. It's a shame he kept getting moved around and didn't make an impact in 08 and 09... Yet another of those 2007 Freshmen who could have really used a redshirt.

Al decided to just go with his numbers he posted at the combine. He didn't want to chance the new turf being slow.

Right — I meant to post that yesterday.

Robinson's Florida-based trainer urged him not to run on the new surface.

I'm certainly no expert on artificial turf, but the trainer might have been right. Having walked on the turf the last couple of days, there some very uneven spots that presumably will even out as the players run on the new rug.

How that translates to running speed, I have no idea.

I think they time his with a sun dial.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

They used to time me with a sun dial.
Now they have stopped humoring me, and they just use a calendar.
