New Kicker for 2005?

Postby GoRedGoBlue » Fri Sep 10, 2004 12:00 am

Just watched CH. 8 Sports report on a senior named DeSilva, a kicker at Oak Academy (Arlington?)...a Brazilian, a soccer player signed by S-M-U that walked on their FB team.

Don't know how accurate, but he kicked-off into the end zone...

Does Hyndman have anything against him kicking for the FB team?

I remember under Cavan we had a soccer player fly all over the country to play soccer and kick for us...

Interesting...

Didn't see him on the list: http://www.smumustangs.com/news/news_re ... sp?ID=3654 oops, that is entering 2004 class...maybe he is just a commitment.

A few years back, Daniel Hernandez, an All-America midfielder for the men's soccer team, doubled up as the football team's kicker. (In his first practice, he followed a left-footed kicker, so he lined up lefty -- and drilled a 55-yard field goal on his first kick with his weaker foot.) Anyway, like GRGB says, he would fly all over the place to play for both teams, often playing the first game of a soccer tournament on Friday, flying to a football game Saturday, then back for the second game of a tournament with the soccer team on Sunday. Schellas Hyndman thought he was wearing down, and although he was basically on loan from the soccer team, Mike Cavan didn't like sharing him. So the experiment lasted one year. Hernandez now plays professional soccer in Mexico, and was quoted in the spring as saying he'd like to kick for the Dallas Cowboys.

Don't bet on that arrangement happening again any time soon. Besides, Chris McMurtray has looked very good in practice (and was 2-for-2 against Tech), and has another year left after this one.

new kicker

No way we need to "share" a kicker. McMurtryhas another year and we have some big legs in this year's freshman class that are practicing daily.

I was about to say, didn't we get a good kicker from HP last year? Our present guy seems to be doing fine, but I thought we had a little depth...

We did - last year we signed Ryan Wolcott, the grandson of Saint Doak. His mechanics are exceptional, but thus far, he doesn't seem to have the strength/power in his leg that McMurtray does. And "stentman" is right - there are a handful of walk-on kickers/punters out there every day, although I'm not sure who they all are. A couple of them seem to have strong legs - not sure about their accuracy (when I've watched that group, I'm usually looking at McMurtray and Mentzel, since they're playing right now....)

Walcott is a good kicker. his numbers at HP were extrely high, but the majority of his points were PATs due to the number of times the Scots were able to get into the endzone.
Ok this is getting ridiculous...I agree with Dutch on THIS ONE POST by him totally
