Stallion's Recruiting Fact o' the Day

Postby ponyboy » Mon May 16, 2011 4:13 pm

There are 23 Rivals Four Star recruits interested in either Rice, Houston, or SMU:

1 is showing interest in Rice
5 like the University of Houston.
17 like SMU.

I think that answers your question, Stallion, as to the quality of our recruiting right now vis a vis at least those two former SWC schools.

Some facts I found interesting...

There are the same amount of kids inRivals 250 from CA and TX.

We have offered 14- 4* and 5- 3*

Of those offers who currently have stars Only 3 are from TX the rest are CA (or other West Coast)

18/50 offers are from TX ( although most of recent offers have been TX and with the upcoming camps that trend seems likely to continue)

Thanks, obviously not a plan to concentrate on areas outside of Texas, but simply the difference in work ethic of individual coaches. Some are out early while the others slumber in bed!

As I said to you via PM, I don't think it's so obvious that some coaches are working harder than others. And I don't know why you're publicly slamming a program that appears to be doing well in recruiting. Something is working.

That's absurd. The coaches go where they are sent, and they offer who they are told to offer. If a coach visits schools and doesn't find players worth offering, that doesn't mean he's not out looking. Besides, several of our players were discovered when they took part in SMU camps, which have not yet been held, right? Based on the talent in the last three classes, PonyFans should be ecstatic with Coach Jones and his recruiting practices. Or were the results better before he arrived?

Sorry guys, Mex mustang is right...some of our coaches do not recruit...they were not brought here to do so..

So, it goes both ways...we have great teachers and some good recruiters ( Klemm = great)....

It is just the way JJ has set up the staff...This was our concern over hiring Ganz to coach Special teams as opposed to getting another young kid who likes to recruit...

original post might have some relevance if in fact we are lucky enough to sign ANY 4 stars. Right now 5 of the 17 have committed to other schools. We are really talking about 3-4 guys we have a realistic chance at. Have no problem with any of them. As EVERYONE has said repeatedly -nobody has a problem with Klemm recruiting California-we wished the SMU staff had about 2-3 more recruiters just like him as most every other school does. I believe just about 100% of those 4 stars are Klemm recruits aren't they? 1 recruiter like Klemm in Texas could come in handy. But you can't really hang your hat on "success" in recruiting 4 stars until you actually get a commitment from 1. Focusing on just 4 stars is however misleading on the big picture since the entire CUSA only gets a handful each year.

Typical. A clear sidestep of the issue at hand from the slickmeister.

Yesterday, you said that you didn't like my data on recruits' interest stating that the data is:
Stallion wrote:Comepletely worthless unless you know the quality of the player-3/4th of which probably aren't Division 1A players.

So I went and found strong data on the "quality of the player"in the form of Rivals Freakin' Four Stars showing interest in SMU versus other former SWC schools.

Knowing you've been beat you don't man up, but want to change the subject. What a joke.

True, many will not commit. That has zero to do with the issue at hand.

Go chase an ambulance.

Are you suggesting that the coaches were told not to go to Houston, North Texas and East Texas until after spring practice and one was told to begin to begin to recruit California in December? or simply suggesting that there are no D-1 recruits worthy of an offer in those areas?

Obvious fact-through the present date SMU has done a pathetic job of recruiting Texas

I would agree with that. It's very disappointing. But again, it comes back to this program manning up and picking up that marquee win to change opinions.

I still believe that while the last two years have been great, these Texas kids want to see you prove it in their state. That's where this staff is lacking IMO.

Win at Amon Carter. Win at Kyle Field. Win at Cougar High. Or win the CUSA championship and then the kids will know you're worth your salt.

Does anyone think TCU's fortunes did not change when they beat USC (I realize that's an out of state school but it has the name value) in the Sun Bowl? I betcha a dime to a dollar that turned head and it's since been followed by consistent wins over Tech, Baylor and the occasional OU that has meant so much in how they get kids to look at them.

Just my perspective.

All is not lost...we got off to a slow start in Texas, but, the coaches can still make a great recovery.

And we've sucked at recruiting Ohio, Florida, Pennsylvania too.

I've made the argument that zip code doesn't determine talent. What is your counterargument?
