Regarding the game SaturdayMost of you know I am not here to gloat. I thought this might happen after the close game last year, but I am very surprised our defense played as well as it did. As I said last week, our offense is very good - the best since I started playing football at TCU in '93. Not much needs to be said about the game itself.
First, my thoughts regarding Bennett - I really like Bennett as most of you know but if I were an SMU fan I would be running out of patience. It is one thing to go through some growing pains but even really bad teams win a game or two. I know about all of the recruiting issues but a good coach will manage to win a game or two along the way. SMU's performance has simply been unacceptable (and I'm sure most of you don't care about a TCU fan's opinion) - and I will be pulling for SMU the rest of the year. How long can you listen to the excuse of youth - good teams play young players too...not as many as SMU maybe but our team is playing a lot of underclassmen this year. Check out the 2 deep roster. Second, I could not attend the game for medical reasons but I hear SMU had a good fan turnout. I hope you all were treated well by TCU folks. What were your thoughts on attendance? It was announced at 33,500 but several people who were there said it had to be closer to 37K or 38K. Do you honestly think there were more than 12K empty seats at the game? Just curious. Finally, good luck against OSU this weekend. I'll be pulling for the Ponies after we exact some revenge against Tech on your behalf.
I sat on both sides of the stadium during the game. The SMU section was well filled towards the field but as you went up there were a lot of empty seats. The rest of the east side of the stadium was packed with fans. After moving, I could see that there were a lot of empty seats in the upper deck. Endzones looked pretty full as well. I'm not too sure of the difference between 33k and 38k though, I didn't take the time to count.
![]() TCU fans for the most part were nice. I did get the "cross town whipping boys" chant when I was leaving the stadium, ha ha. I met a guy in the upper deck that went to Alabama that was just there to watch football - that was cool. Both TCU and SMU needs guys like this to come out to all the games. I would be running out of patience if I had any. I'm ready to win a game. But I really think the Texas Tech game was more indicative of what type of team this is - you guys have a great team out there in Fort Worth and I think we will do better in conference play.
Other than the score of the game, it was a great experience. Frog Alley was fun, the TCU fans were friendly, and for some reason the parking dude didn't charge us to park in his lot! He even offered us a free purple-frosted cookie, but we politely declined...
Now, if you all will just do us a big favor and kick the living daylights outta Texas Tech...
Re: Regarding the game Saturday
33,500 sounds about right to me. I do think that most of the season ticket holders actually showed up, so it was an honest 33,500, not 27,000 with 6K absentee season ticket holders. The corners were empty along with most of the upper deck, and the endzones were about 1/2-2/3 full.
On a TCU fan's WORST day, they'd still have more class than most of the Texas Tech fans who were in Dallas two weeks ago. I sat in the endzone (under the JumboTron) and, for the most part, was treated nicely by TCU fans sitting around me. One jerk did yell out to the SMU Chi Omegas cheering for the Mustangs and sitting near me, "Shut Up! You're losing!" Another guy asked me if I was going to stand the entire game and I said, "Only when it's warranted!" Obviously, that didn't last long.

A partial shot of SMU fans at the game. The picture does not include the Mustang band, or the fans around them which was to the left of this photo, or those that were higher up or in the endzone. The game pretty well dictated that we were a quiet group.

from my earlier post:
for those of you who can remember the Ron Meyer years, this is the equivalent of Harvey Armstrong's freshman year. We actually won four games that year....and recruited Eric Dickerson and Craig James later that winter. The following year, we had a losing season, with James and Dickerson as freshman. The next year...Holiday Bowl. Point is: It does take time (in Meyer's case...4 years) to build and get players. So get out to the next home game, support the team and know that SMU is great place to play football and get a quality education!!! SMU...2nd to None
OMG! Look who's back!???!!!! WreckEm16...either I missed it or you haven't posted since before the TT game.
When I got to the game (ok sorry but the will call thing at TCU is horrible. We went atleast 5 different places till we finally got to the right place got in the stadium as the national anthem was being sung) Around my seats everything was filled. I sat right on the 14 yard line.
Ill tell you one thing...Never will I wear an SMU flag like I did to the game again...Holy crap...Freakin hot. But the bad thing by the end of the game...There was about nobody around me except for the 5 people that came with me...OO well....Time to wait till San Jose State...If we dont win that game dear lord we dont deserve to win a game this year. ![]()
I've just now recovered my computer from the clutches of the Blue Screen of Death.
That and I decided to wait until emotions had sufficiently calmed after Leach and Bennett's p!ssing contest. Didn't want to get into shouting (TYPING?) matches with anyone. And when I die
You can bury me
In Lubbock, Texas,
In my jeans.
-Mac Davis
Not to worry WreckEm16, you're one of the good guys. I admit that I'm torn between wanting to see Tech clobbered to humble Mr. Leach a bit and wanting to see TCU brought down a notch. Neither result really does us any good, so I think I'll just stay out of it and see what happens. It should be interesting, but I'm much more concerned in seeing us do better every game until we are winning most of them. Hopefully these young players of ours can do some fast maturing and learning.
Re: Regarding the game Saturday
There is no doubt you guys played a game where we were beat in nearly every aspect of the game. But we have never been treated and abused worse than by any fans like we were by your fans, and this was going into the stadium. I have two young kids, we have SMU stickers on our car and dressed in our red and blue. I enjoy a competitive spirit and the back and forth between teams and fans. We were blocked in the parking lots by your drunken supporters, we were called everthing from A$$h%&*s to FU's on the way in, all the while my wife and I kept our mouth completely shut. For who ever said TT was worse, is wrong. We had a good time last year right in the middle of their huge tailgate party, alot of good natured ribbing, game discussion and offering of all the food and drink they had, but nothing of the low class name calling and actions that we experienced Saturday. My uncle played for TCU and I was embarrased by what I saw.
I think every team has their share of rotten fans, but I would definitely say that the fans in Lubbock were worse than TCU. I've never had anyone at TCU throw quarters at me or actually come into our section and try to start a fight. In fact, as I recall several people were actually arrested at the Tech game last year.
Re: Regarding the game Saturday
That is by far the worst I have heard about from visiting fans to TCU. I think the vast majority of TCU fans try to be respectful of their opponents. All of us that made the trip up to Nebraska a couple years ago learned what a great experience it can be at an opposing stadium when the home fans treat their guests with class. On behalf of almost all the TCU fans (or at least the ones with class), I'm sorry you had to put up with that crap. Every team has fans like that and I am sorry you had to deal with that group of "fans".
