CRITICISM OK... BUT STOP THE [deleted]

Postby SWC2010 » Mon Sep 13, 2004 7:29 pm

LAST POINT FIRST! SMU players & prospective players considering SMU read this site. They see all your personal diatribes. Most all of the eyes of the “guests” you see on PonyFans.com are not the competition—they are the eyes of our players & future players.

What kind of a message are we sending with this carping & whining? To all of those select 'supporters' who have become chronic complainers (especially since the disappointing loss in FW), let me say that venting & constructive criticism is fine. Nothing needs to be sugarcoated on this site.

BUT, go take the personal & verbal abuse outside & use it on your pet. What, you say, you wouldn’t talk to a dog that way? Well, that’s my point. Those of you who challenged the players about their ‘effort’ & using words like “uninspired” or " quitting"did not see the same game.

Sorry, but I saw a team trying to make things happen. But at most every turn in the game, TCU seemed to make a play. “Uninspired”, you say? What about DD Lee, who left the game early but returned and played with a busted arm and a banged up knee?

As for effort, I didn’t see any red shirts in the stands offering to fight the frogs as Adami did in the 1st half when things didn’t go our way.

Were there errors? Yes, probably too many to mention. Ex: our offensive play calling should include throwing the ball past the first down marker. Our defense must find a way to make stops regardless of the offensive firepower they face.

Although it’s no consolation, IMO, we met up with TCU on their best day of the entire season. They’ll look back & find this was the finest hour. The offense was incredible—hell, they avg. over 40 pts/game so far. And the defense, well, they looked like they knew the play before we ran it.

Yeah, I know it’s been a long time & everybody is frustrated. You don’t think the players are frustrated? They thought they had turned a corner v. Tech. They’re not where they want to be, yet.

Sorry, but it doesn’t help things to attack the guys who wear the uniform every Saturday. Say what you want and be constructively honest when you see the need. Got a problem with the coaches or administration? Fire away-- that’s part of their battle pay. But, when you’re here, keep in mind that you’re not sitting in a corner at Stan’s Blue Note.
What you say gets around so take a breath before you ‘hit’ SUBMIT.

Alright, I'll bite...here goes...

To the SMU Football team...

Tough loss Saturday...keep you collective chins up, but not so far up as to get smacked in the mouth.

Don't let anything you read on this board distract you (I highly doubt you will, but it should be said anyway.) Play your game Saturday, and leave it all out on the field. Those of us who can be there most certainly will. Those of us who can't will be listening on the radio or internet.

I don't know if it will take one season, one month, or one game, but I know that it starts with one play. That play, and then another, and then another. Forget this forum, or for that matter, the fans in general.

Look next to you...to the guy at your right shoulder...and the one to your left shoulder. Those are the guys you are bleeding for. Not for the smartass on this board who says you can't do it. Not for the AD, or even the coach. (Maybe the cheerleader with the sweet a--, but hey, we have to draw the line somewhere! :P )

We all want you to succeed, but you guys have to go out and do the heavy lifting. Good luck to you. Hope you have some fun in the process. And frankly, I hope that you win after giving 110% of yourself. THAT, and only THAT, is all you should ever worry about....

And if we don't like the results...well, then we can get over it.

Good luck, Saturday.

Well said, both of you. We can always be more supportive, and should be more supportive. These guys are out there busting tail for us, at least in part, and I, for one, greatly appreciate the heart and effort of every Mustang.

Were you just born yesterday?

First of all, this board is a board for SMU fans and critics alike to talk about what they're seeing and get their frustrations off their chests. The players are not babies and shouldn't be coddled. Everyone has a right to say what they feel, and frankly, I think maybe some of the players need to see some of the stuff that gets pumped out on this board.

Second, most people on this board have been living through this sh*t for a long frickin' time! YES....we are pissed. Most of the players I feel are trying hard; Speaking of last years' players, however, many did not give a crap! Coaches, Admin and, YES, players need to know that SMU has alumni, and alumni have a right to expect their alma mater to be fought for with pride and enthusiasm. So go create a PC board on SMUmustangs.com if you want cookies and milk. Better yet, go find a YMCA team to sign your son up for instead of NCAA Div. 1 athletics.

Third, I am all for giving our players support. I think they deserve it after the way they fought Tech. However, they need to shake this TCU debacle off, get through the OSU game, and think ahead to the SJSU game. Frankly, the [deleted] who scheduled OSU 3 years in a row should be beaten with a stick...but right now, the players just need to get through it with no injuries and without OSU demoralizing them. Then, they need to go out and get some conference wins.

Going winless again, however, is not acceptable, and NOBODY deserves jack sh*t if they let that happen. There is no excuse for not beating SJSU or Tulsa or UTEP or Rice. If SMU loses all 4, alumni have a right to say anything they want to clean house from top to bottom...[/quote]

Only winning will shut us up

Postby Sam I Am » Tue Sep 14, 2004 8:27 pm

There is a sure cure for the so called [deleted] on this board - try winning and see what happens. Our complaints are less with the players than the coaching and the adminstrations policies that have kept the program non-competitive. The problem is that post-DP, others have done more with less.

The worst is the daily campus. I can't believe that real students actually write these anti-smu articles.

Some year we will surprise people!!

Pardon me but what in the article do you view as 'anti-SMU'? The reporter stated facts and statistics. I thought it was fairly well-written for a college newspaper story.

Campus sports report was accurate and fair

The Campus sports report of the TCU-SMU gam was factual, accurate, and not particularly critical either.

Well, hell, jtstang, we may have played shuffleboard together back in the 70's... Oh, and thanks for the beers!

Did they not interview anyone? They could have written this off a boxscore, and that can backfire. Not that this story is overly inaccurate, but it makes you wonder if they were at the game.

SAMIAM said: The problem is that post-DP, others have done more with less.

Great point and I agree. More has been done with less talented players, less facilities and less advantageous recruiting standards.
